Torin sat down. Soren and I joined him. My stomach growled.

“Alistair has issues,” Soren leaned to me and whispered into my ear.

“It’s okay. We all have our share of stuff.” I called over to the twins at the grill. “The food looks great, guys.”

The pack was different from what I expected. Each of the wolves had their own distinct personality.

One of the twins put a full plate in front of Soren. We all started eating while making small talk. It was nice just to hang out and chat over some delicious food. I felt that the pack accepted me.

Soren leaned closer after we finished and whispered into my ear. “Would you like to see my room?”

Shivers ran down my spine. His warmth, his presence, was electric to me.

“Yes, absolutely. But what about the guys?”

“They’ve seen my room already.” Soren raised his eyebrows in mock shock.

I was just about to punch his upper arm when I recalled that it hurt me so much more than it did him. Soren grabbed me and threw me over his shoulder. Even though I acted like I protested, I was delighted by his savage ways.

Yana lay over my shoulder and scratched my back with her short nails. I walked her into my quarters. I had a huge corner suite with a master bathroom and a balcony overlooking the forest. It was so much more than I needed, but it was a nice place to crash.

Today disturbed me.

I threw Yana on my bed and jumped in next to her. Her presence, her warmth, all felt like home. Her fingers found my hair, and she pulled me toward her.

“What was going on there?”

“What did the boys tell you?”

“Nothing. The twins are so funny, and William talked books. Torin made a huge effort not to speak of Alistair and obey you. What’s Alistair’s deal?”

“He is... Yana, I don’t want to talk about him. I need to deal with him.”

“Okay, I was just asking.”

“I know. I want to focus on you, on us.”

She was in my bed, and my heart was soaring with the love and passion I felt for this beautiful woman. She was the missing part, even though I lied to myself for so long, telling myself I didn’t need her. She was my lifeline. She was it.

Mine.

I hovered over her lips and planted soft kisses on her neck before returning to claim what was mine. No book, no story, nothing prepared me for how I felt for her.

Out of the blue, my mate pulled away.

“I think I need to go home.”

“Why? I mean, sure, I’ll take you.”

Yana was not well. “You said that mates have no secrets, but here we are, and you are keeping secrets from me.”

She erupted, and I was surprised by the depth of emotion on her face. After I asked her, she said she was fine. She looked fine.

“What, wait. I don’t understand.”
