Just as I was about to rip Karl a new one, I felt a sharp pain in the back of my neck. I tried to say something but couldn’t. My mouth was disconnected from my brain, and my knees felt weak. The world was going dark around me. My last thought was that Soren would never know what happened to me.

Will lay on Yana’s couch. He was already better. He asked for food. Gunnar ordered him a bunch of things, and he choked them down. I could understand his need. We were all hungry after our bodies took the energy needed to repair extensive damage.

“Where’s Yana? I want to thank her. I think she saved my life.”

Torin made a hand gesture to Will to shut up.

“Alistair told her, and now she’s upset. She rejected me.”

The pain that came with the rejection split my chest open.

As much as I wanted to run after her and take her into my arms, I couldn’t. She was right. Her accusations were all right. I knew her father was alive. I hadn't even considered that when Yana returned to Prudence, all alone, divorced. Yes, it was selfish of me, but telling her about her father didn’t cross my mind. I was in love. My mate was back. I had a second chance and couldn’t be more grateful to the gods for bringing her back to me.

What have I done? I blew it.

I planned to tell her about Alistair. When I introduced her to the pack, I knew that one day someone would slip up and tell her by accident. I just needed more time. Our bond was still fragile, still breakable.

My heart stung for her pain.

With huge steps, I walked to the kitchen. Alistair didn’t move from his spot.

“Why have you done this?”

He lifted his head to face me. “I needed to open her eyes. I had to make her see that wolves are not good for her. She deserves better.”

“I love her. I would give my life for her. And you made her distrust me. How will I ever get her back?”

“Get her back to do what? To get her killed faster?”

“Not all mates have the same destiny as yours.”

Alistair was defiant as always. He was an alpha, too. Even though he was broken, I could feel that.

“How many mated couples are out there, Soren? How many happy wolves and human couples do you know of? Don’t answer. I’ll tell you. There are none, not one. Mates die. Even though they get some of our healing powers, they’re weak and, through their connection, are exposed to things normal humans aren’t exposed to. It’s all on us. We ruin them. We bring darkness into their lives.”

“No, I love Yana. I’d rather die than hurt her.”

“I said the same thing. I would trade my life for Mia. Do you remember Ruby? She was lost and broken after Tristan died. She couldn’t find her place in the world. We all knew her before. She was like Yana, like Mia, filled with life and energy. After that, she was just a shell, going through the motions. She worked, she took care of her granddaughter, and that’s it.”

My wolf called out for my mate. Alistair and I both hurt, but he expressed my rage and desire to have Yana, hold her, sink myself deep into her and bite into her soft flesh. Make her mine.

“I’ll leave,” said Alistair.

“No, you won’t.”

“What?”

“You won’t leave her, Alistair. Not again. You’re going to stay here and work this out with Yana.”

He stood and looked into my eyes. “Is this an order?”

“Damn, yes. If you refuse, it’s a challenge against me, and I swear I’ll rip your spine out.”

“This is personal, not pack.”
