“I just made it pack.”

“Alpha.”

“No,” I barked at Alistair. I was sick of him. He should get his crazy in check . The Demons had a new weapon. My mate was upset with me, and I probably had lost her. I almost lost a pack member tonight. This was not the moment for anyone to play with me, not now.

I felt the need to allow my wolf to run.

“Make sure you leave the place clean,” I barked to Torin.

I shifted and broke into a run toward the woods. One of the good things about Prudence was that there were never people on the streets at night. It was silent and calm, and offered a sense of peace and quiet.

Trees surrounded me. My wolf had a sense of peace. Even though I knew Yana was upset, I couldn’t stop myself from reaching out to her through our mating bond. It was not eternal, not yet. I couldn’t wait for the day when Yana would be my mate in front of the gods, too.

It pained me that she was hurt.

My wolf was all instinct, but I allowed myself to imagine how I would feel if I were in her place. How hurt would I be if I found out that my father was alive after all these years and not only didn’t want to see me, but my mate knew of his existence and hid that from me?

Even in wolf form, I tasted the betrayal Yana must feel.

It was my fault. Such things were hard to communicate to anyone. How could I have told her that her father was alive? How?

I was so high on having her with me, finally feeling like a whole wolf and human, that I hadn’t considered it. Maybe she’ll give me another chance.

I reached out for our bond. It felt weak. And distant. Instinct told me it should not feel this way, not if she was still in Prudence. I should feel her life force roaring. Instead, I barely felt a trickle.

Something was wrong.

I turned and sprinted back to Yana’s house.

The guys were about to leave. I grabbed my phone from the cab of my truck. I hit Yana’s number. The phone rang, but there was no answer.

Torin approached me.

“Voice mail. There’s something wrong. I feel it. The bond doesn’t feel right.”

“Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe she’s still driving.”

“No. Call our connection. Find her truck. Find Yana.”

“Where are you going?”

“The hospital. I need to see if she’s there. And I’m going to break that pathology guy into pieces.”

I first thought that Karl, who left her at the abandoned house, had hurt her. I was ready to rip off his arms like the wings of a fly and beat him with them. No one hurts my mate and leaves unaltered.

The hospital looked peaceful. It was a small hospital in a small town. All the serious cases were sent to bigger cities. This was a place where people walked in with minor issues and left the place feeling better.

A guard at the door gave me a look. He stood.

“Is Yana Lane here?”

I could feel him take a step back. Smelling the air around him, it was clear he understood on a deep level that I was a threat, that I was not words and no action. He had shifter blood, but it was something small, maybe some sort of rodent. The blood was not strong enough to turn him into a shifter. He was aware, on a deep subliminal level, that I was trouble and could gut him in one second.

“She’s not working now.”

“Who are you?” I asked.

“The night guard.”
