We followed him up the stairs to a room with a large bed in the center. “I changed the sheets last night. Two of you can sleep here and someone else can sleep in my bed and I’ll sleep on the sofa bed in the office. Hopefully, no one has any problem with doubling up.”

Savida laughed heartily, and Daithi breathed a few chuckles. “There will not be any problem with us sleeping together.” Savida grinned.

“I feel like I’m missing something.” Charlie’s gaze darted to each of our faces.

I hastily told him before he interrogated us again. “Savida and Daithi are partners.”

And they were good ones. They balanced each other out. Savida’s playfulness lightened Daithi’s serious heart, and Daithi’s good sense prevented Savida’s chaotic recklessness.

“Oh.” Charlie looked between them and nodded. “I can see that. Well, in that case, keep the sex noises to a minimum, please.”

Savida laughed. “We will do our best.”

“Thank you.” Charlie looked at me. “I guess you’re in my bed. Let me show you.”

It looked very similar to the guest room. Neat and organized, with a large bed in the middle. “I do not wish to put you out, Charlie. I will stay in the office bed.”

“It’s fine. I want to stay in there tonight anyway, so I can get started on uploading that picture and researching.”

I paused. “You will do this as we sleep?”

“Well, yeah.” He rubbed the back of his head. “You want to find her as soon as possible, right?”

“I’m honored you would lose sleep to help me. Thank you.” I laid my hand on his shoulder and squeezed.

“Let’s not make a big deal about it. I’m curious too and finding things is a specialty of mine. I like a challenge.”

I nodded. “There is great reward in winning a challenge.”

“Well, let me grab some clothes and stuff and I’ll be out of your way.” He moved to the long doors opposite the bed, opened them, and pulled out a few items.

As he was closing the door behind him, I spoke softly and stopped him. “I appreciate your help, Charlie. Know that by finding my soul pair, I will owe you a life debt and you will have my greatest respect and friendship.”

Charlie cleared his throat. “I’ll do my best for you, Zaide.”

“That is all I ask.”

With a soft click of the door, he left me in silence. I removed my clothing and shoes, leaving only my undergarments on, and sat cross-legged on the floor. I pulled my sacred stone from the tie in my braid, closed my eyes and inhaled slow breaths and I traced the narrow, carved lines in the stone.

I prayed.

Almighty gods, to you I pray. My life and worship are yours. I continue to thank you for my friends, Savida and Daithi who, by your guidance, saved me from slavery. I am ever grateful that you helped me.

And yet, selfishly, I ask more.

I pray to Riseir, god of life, that our time on Earth be a joyous one. I pray to Hedri, god of love, that you guide me to my soul pair. Finally, I pray to Charos, god of death, that my soul pair has not greeted you as she passed from this life.

But, as I crawled into bed, I had the sinking suspicion that I might be too late.

CHAPTER6

ZAIDE

Something brushed my foot, and my eyes shot open.

A smile stretched across my face as I rolled over in Charlie’s bed to see that I wasn’t alone. Savida had crept into the room and curled up next to me in the night. He was still sound asleep and wrapped up in his own wings on top of the bedsheets.

It was a rare occurrence and only happened when he felt unsettled.
