I stretched, overjoyed to have slept solidly for the first time in many years. Nightmares about my family or my captivity didn’t encroach on my peaceful slumber. I sent a quick prayer of thanks to my gods for yet another miracle.

Perhaps it was because I was in the same realm as my soul pair, and that missing part of me was already healing.

I moved to wake Savida when Daithi and Charlie knocked softly and came in.

“I thought I might find him here. I’m not offended my lover sneaked into bed with you, Zaide.” Daithi’s expression was empty of emotion, but his voice was full of humor.

“I do not snore as you do.” I grinned at him teasingly and stretched.

“Okay, so this is normal? He usually sleepwalks?” Charlie asked. “Should I expect to find him in bed with me tomorrow?” Savida sighed deeply and snuggled deeper into his wings. He mumbled something. “Aw, he is kind of cute. Like a giant bat.”

“Unless your scars are luminous in the night, he will not bother you,” Daithi informed Charlie.

Charlie looked at me. There was an intrigued sparkle in his eye. “Those are scars? They keep glowing in your sleep? That is bloody mental.”

“You are more impressed by his scars than my magic?” Daithi raised a green brow.

“Your magic still freaks me out. His scars are cool.” He had a thought and then asked, “Why is Savida attracted to glowing scars? Is he like a moth?”

Daithi was silent for a moment before he spoke. “I do not know what a moth is. However, Savida likes to fall asleep with a light.”

“He’s afraid of the dark?”

“He was in that hole for a very long time, Charlie.”

“He was conscious?” We nodded, and Charlie’s face distorted with his disgust. “That’s fucked up. Did you find who did that to him?”

Daithi shook his head slowly. “We left the human realm a day or so after I found him. I wanted him safe.”

“But how did he get there, here?”

“I don’t know, Charlie. Perhaps you can help us find that out, too.”

Charlie nodded and whispered, “If he needs a nightlight, we can go shopping and get him one. That wouldn’t be a problem.”

“Shopping?” Savida’s eyes suddenly opened, and he unraveled his wings, setting his arms free. “We are going shopping?”

I guffawed at his excitement, and Daithi’s lip curled slightly.

The exclamation and sudden movement startled Charlie, but he grinned at Savida and shrugged. “We can if you fancy it.”

“Right now?”

“Yeah, after breakfast, we can go.”

He rolled straight out of bed. “I’m ready.”

There was a movement on the other side of me. The window material rustled. “Charlie, something is invading your home.”

From the material dropped a fluffy, small creature. Everyone was still. Assessing.

I was enraptured. In the puddles of sunbeams, from the gaps in the hanging material, sat a creature with violet eyes that flicked to everyone in the room. Its fur was a white and orange blend, exceptionally thick and shone under the light. Its tail swayed, curling from one side to another like a large feather. At the sight of the creature, calm and peace covered me like a blanket.

When the creature moved toward the bed, Savida screamed and jumped behind Daithi. “What is it?”

The creature stepped back and made an aggressive hiss at the loud noise. I glared at Savida.

Charlie tried to calm the situation. “Calm down, you big fucking girl’s blouse. It’s Clawdia. The cat from next door I told you about yesterday.”
