It was time to heal and change for the better.

Just as soon as I could tell Daithi to turn me back.

Charlie sighed and rubbed my head. “Nice to have you back, Clawdicat.” I licked his fingers, and he sighed again.

I meowed, wanting to tell him this was an accident. I wanted to stay with him and Zaide.

Could I type on Charlie’s laptop?

“We need some dinner because I am absolutely starving, and then we need to get to bed and get back to finding Savida’s fire.” He rubbed his belly and walked to the phone on the desk. He flicked through a pamphlet on the desk, and when the person on the other end of the phone picked up, he began telling them exactly what he wanted to eat.

Jealously had me huffing. I wanted to eat with them. I imagined a lasagna with garlic bread or a steak pie with lots of gravy and mash or a chicken casserole with lots of black pepper …

And then my nostrils tingled.

I breathed out sharply to prevent the coming sneeze. But it was too late. As if reacting to the thought of pepper, my body curled in on itself, and I sneezed so hard it was like being struck by lightning.

My foggy head and running eyes momentarily stopped me from processing what I saw when I looked down—human hands. I gasped and squealed as I saw the rest of my human body. I touched my now naked skin, shocked and confused, then looked up, tears edging into my eyes, and saw the shocked face of Charlie. His blond eyebrows launched into his hairline.

He looked at Zaide and Daithi, who were in the middle of an argument.

“Guys—” Charlie started.

Daithi continued lecturing, “You cannot expect that someone so emotionally damaged—”

“Guys—” Charlie tried to interrupt again.

“—would want to be mated to you. We also don’t know the effects of mating on either of you.”

“For fuck’s sake,” he muttered and marched toward their towering bodies.

“A soul pair bond of your race hasn’t been—”

Before I could try to understand how I was suddenly human again or what they were arguing about, my nostrils tingled once more. The same lightning strike hit me again as I sneezed. This time, with the brutal pain and the aching head, I turned back into a cat.

I can be both. Human and cat. I just need to know how to control it. Do I have to sneeze?

Excitement bubbled up inside me. I didn’t have to choose. I could have my cake and eat it.

“Shut the fuck up!” Charlie shouted. To make them notice me, he pushed them away from each other. Since they hadn’t been paying attention to him, they fell back onto the sofas with ease despite their size. “Look!” He pointed at me.

I did the cat version of a smirk and then innocently licked my paw when Zaide and Daithi looked at me.

Charlie rubbed his eyes and dragged a hand through his hair. “What the fuck?” He looked tired, and a glimmer of guilt twinged my conscience for messing with him until I remembered it wasn’t my fault.

Daithi answered, “Yes, Charlie, she is a cat again.”

“No, she isn’t. Wasn’t,” he growled. “She was human just a second ago.”

Zaide responded slowly. “She was human, and then Daithi turned her back.”

I giggled in my mind.

“Don’t talk to me like I’m fucking delusional. I know what I saw.” He pointed at me again. “She was a cat, and then she sneezed and turned back into a human, and then I tried to interrupt your fighting to show you, and then she was a cat again.” He glared and yelled, “Turn back right now and tell them!”

Zaide put a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Charlie, it has been a long week for us all, and you are overworked. You have barely slept the past few nights. Perhaps you need to retire for the evening and when your food arrives, I will bring it to you.”

“I’m not overtired.” He shrugged Zaide’s hand off him and glared at me again. “You’re making me look stupid, Clawdicat.”
