“He’s caught me. He was about to drain a witch, and I tried to help but …”

My stomach dropped. She was with the agent. And they were in danger because Clawdia tried to help.

“I will find you,”I told her firmly.“Do everything you can to prevent him from taking any power from you. Let him have the witch if it means you survive.”

I hated to say it—it went against our nature—but there was no other option.

“But—"Clawdia hesitated, and I understood why.

“It is a terrible option, but if you die, we die, Clawdia. If you are hurt, we are hurt. We love you. Fight for us.”

I felt the resolve in her as much as I felt her fear. “I will,”she promised, andI was reassured she wouldn't sacrifice herself. She'd protect us all.

"We need to hurry," I blurted, interrupting the brewing of an argument. "Clawdia is caught by the dragon after trying to rescue a witch from being drained."

"Rose," Arabella breathed. "Step on it, Isaac. We need to get away from our stalkers too." Doing as instructed, he put his foot down and began speeding past other cars at a dizzying pace.

"I still can't see who you think is following us."

"I can," Alcor said. "Black car two behind us in the middle lane. They have stayed exactly two cars behind us this entire journey and, even now, are keeping up."

"Thank you," Arabella drawled and sent a pointed look at Isaac.

"Who are they? Why would they follow us?"

"I don't know."

We turned off the busy motorway and wormed our way onto a quieter road surrounded by tall grass.

I groaned as a flash of pain zapped me. It wasn't my own. It was from Clawdia, and I knew it was because she was being drained by the dragon. I felt her try to close our connection.

Clawdia, stop!I yelled, panic rushing through me.I need you to stay open to me. I need to find you.

I don’t want you to get hurt, she whimpered, and my heart sank even as it reached out to her.

And I don’t want you or us dead. Do not block our connection.

Hurry.

I will, Little Cat. Keep strong.

I opened my eyes to hear Arabella scream, "Isaac they're charging at us."

I turned to look out the rearview window and saw the black car racing toward us, no longer hiding behind vehicles or pretending not to follow us. Now they were here to stop us.

Their windshield glass was tinted a dark hue, so I couldn't see who was in the car to know who our enemy was, but it didn't matter. We weren't fast enough to get away, and soon, they moved into the other side of the road, facing oncoming cars.

"Fucking hell," Isaac muttered, his face flush with the stress.

"They are trying to run us off the road. Slow down," Arabella screeched.

But Isaac didn't get a chance to slow down. They swerved toward us, and instinctively, he swerved away, sending us into the long grass and smashing into a tree.

Everything went black.
