“Charlie seems to be winning this.”Baelen observed.

“I am not ashamed to have emotions, Charlie. It is you who struggles with such things.”

“Zaide is making a comeback,”I added.

“I’m not going to stay away from my familiar because you demand it. She’s mine as much as she is yours.”

I thought back to when I used to pine after him as a cat, loved being in his arms, loved teasing him. It was hard to believe he was now claiming a bond with me. Calling me “mine.” Apart from hearing him call me Clawdicat, “mine” was now my favorite word from his lips.

“You cannot have her!” Zaide roared and charged toward Charlie, picking him up and pushing him into the bars of the jail. The blue barrier sprang to life.

Charlie screamed. “Help! Otherworlder gone mad. Help!”

“If they enter this cave after such a terrible performance, they deserve death,” Baelen said.

I stifled my laughter as the male witch from before came jogging in. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Get ready, Sunlight.”

“This crazy fucker is trying to kill me,” Charlie cried.

The witch sighed and glared at Zaide. “Step away from him.”

“And if I don’t? If I kill him right now?” Zaide growled and tightened his grip on Charlie's clothes. I’m sure I saw a flicker of fear in his eyes.

I jumped into the action. “Don’t! Zaide, you know you can’t kill him. You’ll kill me too. Can’t you both just get along?”

“I’ll get you a new witch. We’ve done it before,” Zaide said, then turned his gaze to the witch beyond the bars. “This one looks pliable enough.”

The witch coughed. “No killing anyone. We need you all alive.”

“Sunlight, I’m going to take control now. Don’t be frightened.”

It felt as if ice slid through my veins, and I felt pushed to the back of my mind as I lost control of my body. I could see through my eyes but couldn’t feel the blinks or open my mouth to scream my panic.

“It’s okay, Sunlight. It’s only me. I know this is strange, but I cannot think with you screaming.”

I tried to calm myself down with deep breaths. Mental ones since my mouth wasn’t mine anymore. “I’m sorry.”

My hands raised in front of my face, and with a flick of my finger, power, like a tsunami rushing to a harbor, pulled the witch forward, blood gushing from his nose as he hit the bars and the forcefield lit up and faded.

“Zaide, hold on to him. Quick.” My voice said but in a commanding tone that no one had ever heard from me before. Charlie looked from the witch to me in confusion. Zaide narrowed his eyes at me suspiciously but did as asked. “Get the key.”

Zaide bent down, reached through the powerless bars, and ruffled through the witch’s clothes for the key.

We’re going to escape,I thought to myself, feeling like I was vibrating with the adrenaline, excitement, and nerves clashing together inside me.

I forgot that I wasn’t alone in my head. Baelen replied, “Lucky that this witch cast the forcefield or this wouldn’t have worked.”

“What do you mean?”

“I have found that the blood of the being that cast can cancel most magics in the interlinked dimensions. But I did not know if this witch was the one who had cast this forcefield. I believed they would be close but not the first to enter. It does not bode well that he was the only witch to come.”

“Why is that not good? We’ve broken the forcefield.”

"Because if the witch with the power to unlock the spell is the only one here, where are the others? What are they doing?”

“They are preparing.”
