He chuckled, the deep rumbling sound sending heat rushing through me. “You don’t need to speak aloud, Sunlight. I am in your mind. I will tell you what to do and use my power through you."

Sunlight. He called me sunlight? Because of my … taste?

I paused and then refocused. “That sounds really difficult.”

“I am the son of gods, Sunlight. I will be fine. Wake up your males.”

Nodding to myself, I reached over to Charlie and shook him. “Charlie.”

He mumbled, “Clawdicat?” and my heart warmed at the thought that I was on his mind. When I shook him again, he came awake quickly. “What’s wrong?” He sat up, pushing his hair back and squinting his eyes to stare at me in the dark.

“We’re escaping,” I whispered.

“What?” he asked, his voice pitched higher.

I turned to Zaide and shook his shoulder. “Wake up, Zaide.” His head dropped off his shoulder and then suddenly shot up, his purple eyes wild and distant. “Zaide,” I said more softly, my touch soothing. “I need your help.”

“With your males awake, you need to attract the attention of the enemy. Someone we can use,”Baelen said in my thoughts.

I nodded at his instruction and relayed it to my witch and my soul pair.

“I’d feel more comfortable if I knew what the plan was, Clawdia,” Charlie grumbled as he stood up. He shook out his arms like he was preparing for a fight.

“Just trust me.” I saw the doubt in his eyes—it probably reflected my own—but I didn’t have any other option than to trust Baelen.

“I will save you all, Sunlight. Have faith.”

“Little Cat, you are getting us out of this cage?” Zaide whispered and gripped my hand tightly.

“We’re leaving right now,” I said with renewed confidence.

He nodded, and for the first time since I woke up, the fog in his eyes cleared, and he focused on me entirely. “What do you need me to do?”

“Cause a scene. We need someone to check on us.”

“They’re probably listening.” Charlie scowled at the ceiling.

“I’m hoping they can’t hear whispers or aren’t paying attention right now,” I replied.

“So what's the game plan? Do we write a quick script first?” Charlie asked.

Zaide rose to knees, still managing to intimidate with his large frame despite not being able to stand to his full height in the cramped cave. His face was like thunder as he glared at Charlie, and for a moment, I feared he’d slipped back into his head and forgotten us. But I’d underestimated my soul pair's capacity for acting. He growled, “You have been entirely too close to my soul pair.”

“Improvising it is,” Charlie whispered before raising his voice, quickly joining the scene, “I’m her witch! And I’ve been looking after her while you’ve just been meditating or whatever the fuck this zoned-out statue thing is that you’ve had going on.”

I winced. Although they were having a fake argument, they were using truths.

“Your soul pair has been a zoned-out statue all this time?”Baelen asked.

“We think he’s been having flashbacks to his captivity.”

“Ah, so he was a slave. But perhaps his state is more to do with regaining half his soul through his connection with you.”

I considered that.“I suppose we won’t know if that’s true until more soul pairs are created.”

Zaide continued, “You have no honor to respect the sanctity of our relationship. Our souls are bound together. Our connection is far superior.”

“Pretty sure I’m bound to her soul too since it was me who saved her life. You were just crying to your gods.”
