We stay parked on the street while Rory pulls into her driveway. As soon as she gets out and goes to the trunk of her car, Hayes and I hop out too. It’s late afternoon on a Thursday, and most people are still at work. The houses are spaced far enough apart with plenty of trees between that no one should be able to see us unless they pull up to the driveway too.

I see that she’s talking on the phone, so I gesture for Hayes to wait a moment. We don’t want to cut off her conversation and alert anyone to a problem too soon. She’s digging around in her groceries but isn’t pulling anything out yet, so I’m not worried about her turning around and noticing us at the end of the driveway, then I hear the all important end of her conversation.

“No, Flora. I just want to stay in tonight. I promise I’ll call you tomorrow, and we can probably do something this weekend. Love you.”

Rory tucks the phone into her purse and reaches for her first round of groceries. The syringe is ready at my side, and Hayes and I advance. I plunge the needle into her neck, and with barely a whimper, Rory collapses. I catch her before she hits the ground, and Hayes and I wear matching smiles of triumph.

You’re ours now, my little sleeping beauty.

Rory

“Areyousureeverythingis okay, Sweet Pea?” My dad can be a lot to handle sometimes, but he’s always checking in with me, especially lately.

“I’m fine, Dad. I love you.” He squeezes tighter for a second before pulling back and kissing my forehead.

“I love you too. Let’s have breakfast this weekend. Just the two of us.”

“That sounds great, Dad. I’ll call you later.” He smiles and moves over for Brendan.

He pulls me closer but only gives me a quick kiss on the lips before handing me the car keys. “I’ll see you later, Princess. Don’t wait up.”

“Sure. Have a good rest of the day.” With barely a second glance, he’s walking away engrossed in his phone.

It takes a few more minutes of listening to my mother and future mother-in-law before I can get away and take a deep breath. I’m going to hit up the grocery store and buy my body weight in cookie dough and wine. Or whiskey. Either way, I’m taking a break from my regular existence later.

The grocery store takes a little longer because I remember there are some things we actually need at home and not just junk food. As soon as I’m back in the car, I blast the radio and sing along to some songs that are offensively referred to as oldies. As I’m pulling into the driveway, Flora calls me, and I roll my eyes because I already know what she wants.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Ro Ro! Let’s go out tonight.” The urge to roll my eyes again is strong, but I chuckle instead.

“I’m not in the mood tonight. I have some very serious plans with cookie dough and the couch.”

“Come on, please? You need to get out and do something fun with people that don’t have sticks up their asses. Maybe we can even find you a suitable man to marry.”

“Flora. Cut it out.” She doesn’t love Brendan and thinks I need to postpone the wedding.

“All I’m saying is you’re a hot piece of ass, and you’re only twenty-four. You should run away to Europe for a year or start a secret life as a stripper. Come on, we can go to Sneaky’s tonight and practice on their stripper poles! It’ll be fun. I’ll even wear underwear this time.”

I can’t help but laugh at it all. “We both know that isn’t true. I promise that the marriage ceremony won’t be me bending over and getting anything shoved up my ass. I’ll still be me, and we’ll still hang out all the time.”

“Yeah because your husband will hardly be around. Just come out with me tonight. Please.” Her tone makes me feel a little guilty, but after today, I’m not in the mood to be around people tonight.

I slowly get out of the car and get ready to grab my groceries. I can’t wait to rip this bra off and make a drink.

“No, Flora. I just want to stay in tonight. I promise I’ll call you tomorrow, and we can do something this weekend. Love you.” She sighs and says bye, so I put my phone away and get ready to start my night.

I don’t see the men behind me until there’s a sharp pain in my neck. I can’t focus on their faces or even cry out before everything goes dark.

I’m startled awake but don’t know why. Everything looks fuzzy, and there’s no way I’m getting out of this bed. I snuggle back into the warmth of my blankets and start to drift away again. Faint voices keep me from completely slipping away, but I assume it’s Brendan on the phone or something. My body sinks back into the bed, and a content sigh escapes me.

“That’s right, Princess. Just relax and go back to sleep.” A hand brushes my hair away from my face and trails down my body over the top of the covers.

“Mmm, Brendan?” The words are a little slurred, and my eyes refuse to open. Maybe I drank too much before I came to bed.

“Shh, go back to sleep.” His hand moves back up and pulls the blankets down my body slowly.

The chilly air hits my exposed skin, and goosebumps litter my body. I groan in protest, but it sounds pitiful. Brendan’s hands roam up and down my legs, leaving heat in their wake, and even though I’m so out of it, I can’t deny that it feels good to have him touching me.
