After that, breakfast continued on rather pleasantly, the conversation and laughter helping to lighten the heavy weight resting on my chest.

That was, until a chirping interrupted us.

“Whose is it?” Nana flicked her fork between the two of us, eyes narrowed.

“Not me!” Ollie threw his hands up in innocence.

“Sorry.” I pulled my Comms out, seeing Beckett’s name appear. I clicked the answer button. “Nana Aggie is mad at you for interrupting breakfast.”

Beckett’s full lips frowned. “Well, please give her my sincerest apologies. I would never want to upset Aggie.”

“Oh, is that Beckett?” Nana smiled, leaning over to get into view. “Hello, handsome!”

“Hi, Aggie.” Beckett waved to her. “I didn’t mean to interrupt Kasha’s morning off, I just had a last-minute meeting request that I needed to make sure she was aware of.”

“Oh, please don’t worry, I know you are all very important.” She waved her hands as if it was no big deal, like she wasn’t just chiding me for it moments ago. I rolled my eyes; Nana was in love with my Hierarchy team. “I hope you keep your appetite. I’ll be sending home plenty of leftovers for all of you to enjoy.”

Beckett’s eyes lit up, a laugh bubbling from his lips. “We always have room for your cooking.”

I turned the unit back to me. “What meeting?”

Beckett sighed, his face falling. “Nolan called it the moment he arrived. He wants to get us all up to date about this new case. You need to be back before five.”

My fingers tightened. “Alright, I’ll be there.”

“Thanks, Kas.” He gave me a quick wave before I signed off, slamming the unit down on the table, our plates rattling.

“Sorry,” was all I could mumble, heart racing as I began to count down the hours before I came face to face with my new Alpha.

Chapter Six

The Compound was quiet when I pulled back into the drive early that evening.

I shoved my keys into my pocket, looking around at the twilit pathways. I focused my senses, picking up faint voices down near the training building. Heading in that direction, I internally chastised myself for not stopping home to change back into my training armor. Instead, I was about to meet my new Alpha in a plain, long sleeved grey tunic and my old, worn training pants with nothing but one single dagger hidden in my military-styled boots.

Oh, well, there was nothing I could do about it. It was my day off and he’d interrupted it, so he got what he got.

I nodded to a few Deltas and Dairchtas lingering outside, following the conversations that were getting louder and louder with each step I took, finding myself in the main training area on the top floor. The entire space was made for large group trainings, tests, observation, and certain certification processes for the Fledglings and Omegas. The left wall was taken up by a few rows of stadium seating where clusters of Faction members were sitting around and chatting in small groups. The opposite wall had cubby-like storage areas for those who were training to stash certain items along with a few rows of backup weaponry: daggers, Amalgam Blades, spears, and several others that people may have preferred to practice with. It all revolved around the center of the room, taken up completely by a black, cushioned mat. It was big enough to lead a class or have multiple occurring at once without bothering others.

It seemed today, though, it wasn’t a class people were observing, but the skills of the new Alpha.

I halted in my tracks the moment I crossed the threshold, overtaken by an intoxicating scent: citrus and cinnamon.

My skin prickled at my first glance of him, throat drying. He was tall, obnoxiously so. I was an average height for a woman at around five-and-a-half feet, but he had to be almost a foot taller than me. His dark chocolate brown hair was slicked back away from his slightly-tanned face, sweat coating his sharp features, staring at his opponent in concentration as they fought hand-to-hand.

It was him—the man from the Blood Moon. The one I had acted like a bumbling idiot around.

Who I had been attracted to…

Oh, Goddess above, just shoot me down.

I quickly looked away, scanning the area for someone to sit with, grateful to see Liv and Eden sitting together. I made a path to them, sitting next to Eden, Liv on the bench behind us in a triangle formation.

“He certainly likes to make an entrance, doesn’t he?”I scoffed to the two of them, keeping the conversation private.

“He said he wanted to work off energy from traveling for two days,”Liv explained, her arms propped back against the row behind her, her long legs sprawled out, making her look even taller than she already was.“Invited anyone who was curious to join or spar with him.”

“Who else has he fought?”I glanced back at the show in front of me, where Greyson was currently locked in battle with him.
