“You’re just bitter I won again.”I knocked my muzzle against his neck, pushing him slightly.

His laughter filled my mind.“You tripped me!”

“You got in the way!”I laughed back, rushing to tackle him; but he evaded, sidestepping to the left.“Let’s get back to camp, I could use another ale.”

He nodded, and I trotted behind the giant oak where I had stashed my clothing before transforming. I shifted, feeling the pull and twist of my limbs melding into their second form, just as true as the first, just as much a part of who I was deep to my core. My fur shrank toward me before smoothing out to reveal my creamy, pale skin, my spine straightening until I was standing upright, the only sign that I had just been a wolf the thin layer of sweat from my run and the tingling that came with my glowing yellow irises.

I rolled my shoulders a few times, adjusting before picking my undergarments up, pulling them on to cover the most intimate parts of myself.

Behind me, leaves crinkled. I jerked around to find Logan rounding the tree, eyes glimmering roguishly in the moonlight, his half-smirk plastered on his lips.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I punched him in the shoulder, rolling my eyes. “I’m still getting dressed, you degenerate.”

He always liked to laugh when I got heated, especially during the full moons; this was just him playing a trick on me, trying to get a rise so I would tackle or mock-fight with him.

But he didn’t move, he just stared at me, his form hulking over mine as he took a few steps forward. The skin on the back of my neck prickled as I looked down. “Did you misplace your clothes or something?”

I had seen him naked before—it was a hazard when you were born a Varg Anwyn—but this was different. He didn’t seem in any rush to put his clothes on, let alone feel any shame to be standing there. My stomach churned, the smell of…arousal mixing with the complex scents of the forest. I dared not to look further down, I didn’t want to confirm what I already knew.

I took a few steps back, but he matched them with longer strides, his body pushing mine against the tree, my exposed back scratching against the rough wood as he pressed us together.

“Where you going, Kas?” he whispered against my cheek.

“Back to the camp?” I didn’t know why I asked it like a question or why I just stood there, the heat of his body pressed against mine, and…other parts of him. “Can you get off me, please?”

“You’re so beautiful, Kasha.”

“Logan, please, just stop.” I wiggled around a bit, trying to get my arms in between us, but it was no use.

“Why?” His lips brushed against me, his left hand skimming up my body, disgust running along with each graze of him. I was in shock, in utter disbelief—that was the only way I could comprehend my stillness, my utter lack of action. Why wasn’t I moving?

“I don’t want this.” I shook my head, hoping he would see how badly I just wanted him to step away, to feel the cool air between us so I could finally breathe again.

“That can’t be true,” he chuckled. “You flirt with me all the time.”

“No.” I shook my head more vigorously, my voice weak, heart pounding in my ears. I had no idea what he was talking about. Yes, I teased him and messed around with him, but it was never anything sexual or romantic. It was the same way I treated the other members of the Hierarchy. It was how I treated Ollie and Caleb. What could I have done recently to make him think that this was alright?

My skin was crawling, my insides twisted. Nothing about this was alright.

Finally, something snapped me back to attention and I pushed against him, my pinned arms working against his strength to free me. And I almost did.

His hand took hold of my throat and forced me back against the tree, pinning me there. His grip flexed, my airways constricting a bit. “Shh, don’t talk or make a noise. To anybody.”

It was a command from my Alpha. I wouldn’t be able to fight it; no matter how hard my mind wanted it, my wolf would obey.I was officially cut off from everyone, out loud or mentally, my communication gone. The words and screams that I was desperate to release sat in my mind, but only silence surrounded me in my isolation.

It was just me and Logan.

“It’s going to be alright, don’t worry,” he whispered against the base of my throat, his lips burning against my flushed skin.

I knew what was about to happen, and I prayed to Lunestia that I was wrong. But I knew it was a pointless prayer, I knew it…

I wanted to scream into the darkened sky the moment his teeth sank into my skin where my throat met my shoulder, but his Alpha command kept it buried deep in my chest, silent tears running down my face. He didn’t draw blood or try and drink from me—no, this was different. This was a Mark, this was a branding. It was what Vargs did with their sexual partners, just before they gave into lust: they bit them where all eyes could see that this one was taken.

It was a primal drive buried into the animalistic parts of us. It’s what we did.

He was marking me, trying to claim me as his own. Maybe not forever, but for tonight, this bite mark meant I belonged to him and him alone.

No, this couldn’t happen. Not to me, not like this. I wouldn’t let it. Even with his claiming me, I did not accept it; I would never accept it.
