“Oh, excellent, Becca. I’m pleased.”

She hadn’t communicated with words to Brooke or Nathan — not vocally or telepathically. In less than an hour, he’d managed to get part of the alphabet from her, and now a two-word sentence.

She remained by his side and watched him navigate the various locks required to get into the house, past the hidden doorways, and then finally, onto his level. He stayed in the outermost parts of her thoughts and monitored how she took it in, and it seemed to be more about not wanting to be locked up rather than a specific wish to escape.

Having been locked away as a child after most of his family was slaughtered, Kendric understood the need to be able to open the doors that caged you. He couldn’t give it to her yet, but he’d give her as much as he could, as quickly as possible.

“You earn your freedom, Becca. I hope to be able to give you some level of autonomy when I’m awake, but at least for now, you won’t have it when I’m down for the day.”

He’d asked for a specific tawse and flogger to be placed just outside the dungeon door, and he lifted them both when they reached it. He scented fear from her for a half a second, until he put the flogger into her hands, and then he scented disbelief.

She didn’t believe he was going to let her use it.

Without responding, he opened the door, walked into the dungeon, and smiled when he saw who Janus had brought.
