Aleksey shook himself. ‘I think it’s a brilliant idea.’ So why hadn’t he thought of it? An island with anairstrip…

‘You do?’

‘Yes. I honestly do. Why not? Isn’t it what wealthy people do?’

‘I don’t know. I don’t think so. It’s really hard. Takes a lot of work and study.’

‘No, they do. So they can easily get to their…theyallown their own planes.’

‘Owna plane! I didn’t mean own—wait. You can own a…? Well, I guess you could—’

‘You just told me you wanted to do that very thing. That you wanted to—’

‘Oh, my God! You’re going to buy me a plane? If I learn to fly?’

Aleksey laughed. ‘I guess that’s your birthday present sorted then.’

‘But it’ll take me years to get my licence. Lessons and shit.’

‘Why do you need a licence if you own the plane? Who’s going to know? We do not have driving licences, do we? But that’s never stopped…’ He trailed off at Ben’s expression. ‘Ah. That’s just me then. But I bet there are many pilots who do not have actual licences. No one is going to flag them down in a faster plane and check, are they?’ Aleksey could tell Ben was on shaky ground of knowledge here, as usual, and warmed to his theme. ‘If you can actually work all the dials, who’s going to suspect?’

‘The airport authorities? I guess you’d have to do something official. File a flight plan maybe?’

Not if you have your own airstrip, you wouldn’t.

‘Anyway, I want to do it properly.’

‘Naming of parts?’

Ben grinned. ‘Yep, naming of parts.’

‘So, maths. And shit—as you would no doubt term it. Do you think you will be able to pass?’

The brilliance of Ben’s smile faded. ‘It’s all total gobbledegook at the moment. It kinda assumes a certain level to start with.’

‘Maybe…I could help? Only if you wanted, of course.’

Ben shifted a little, clearly sensing some returning interest inside him. He was noticeably pleased; a second round wasn’t guaranteed these days. ‘You can do equations and calculations? It’s stuff like distance to go and fuel left…’

‘Important then.’

‘I guess.’

‘I do know such things, Benjamin. My superb—’

‘—education at the finest schools money could buy?’

‘Thank you, yes, and if my education lets me down, I do believe we have a budding genius in the family.’

Ben’s grin returned full force. ‘Miles.’

‘Indeed.’

Ben began to ride him gently. ‘You are actually almost intelligent sometimes, Aleksey Rider-Mikkelsen.’

‘I am, Benjamin Rider-Mikkelsen.’

‘I could ask him when we go visit him on his ad—’
