Ican’t seem to get to her fast enough. I pray she’s not bit. It doesn’t look like she is, but it’s not always evident.
And if she is, heaven help Lowtown, because it will burn.
“Am I dead?” Brooke says, sounding so lost.
Finally reaching her, I tilt her chin up so I can look into her sparkling blue eyes. “Sweetheart, you’re not dead.”
“But you’re dead. I saw him kill you.” She looks down at Roy’s corpse.
“He shot me with a weak handgun in a place that was covered in kevlar.” I lift my shirt to show her the bruise. “It will take time to heal, but it didn’t even break the skin.”
I frown when I see a wound on her head.
“Can I look at that?” I ask, fearing the worst.
“It’s where he hit me,” she says. “So he could bring me here.”
I exhale a relieved breath and lean down, kissing her forehead.
“Um…there’s something you should know, though…”
Anxiety spikes, causing my heart to pound fiercely in my chest. “What?”
“I’m sorry to tell you this…but your mom…” she gestures to ground level, and I look down to see a golden-haired corpse.
“Is that her?”
“Yeah—I’m so sorry! I don’t know how she got like that. Probably from pissing the wrong person off, but who knows?”
“Don’t be sorry. At least now I won’t have to hunt her down myself.”
Her brow pinches. “You’re not upset.”
“Baby, as long as you’re okay, everything’s perfect.”
I already have it set in my mind that from here, it’s straight to the Keep. No more risks. Or at least not where she’s concerned. Until my dying breath, she will be cared for, watched over, and pampered.
Brooke dons a lopsided grin. “I never did get to take down a rager, but guess what I got to do instead?”
“What?”
“I took down Frank.”
“And how’d you manage to do that?”
“He tried to feed me to your mom, and using your training, I sent her in Frank’s direction.”
“God, you’re as smart as you are pretty.” I bend, giving her a soulful kiss.
Footsteps catch my attention. I swing around, gun drawn, bracing for the worst. Instead, I see Cole, Alistair, Blake, and Dane charging in.
I lower my weapon. “Threat’s nullified.”
