“Where are they now?” Hunter asks.

“Something happened. At first, I’d thought it was Gabe’s fault, but it turned out to be more than that. I found women hanged outside the windows they sold themselves from, like they were hunted by someone.”

The room is silent because it seems incomprehensible to us that someone would harm a woman when nearly all of them have been wiped out.

“Truth be told, I don’t know how much of the club survived. If Gabe hadn’t rescued Brooke when he had, there may not be a Brooke to rescue, so I can’t hold his incompetent act of heroism against him.”

“Are we still thinking of closing the Keep?” Dane asks.

Cole fixes Dane with an aggressive gaze. “Believe me, that’s the last thing I want, but I can’t predict the future, or the choices I’ll be forced to make.”

“Choices you’ll be forced to make? You might have organized the coup, but you’re hardly our leader.”

Cole snickers. “Don’t tell me you want the job.”

“I don’t, but don’t expect us to follow you blindly, old man.”

Cole’s jaw tenses, and for a moment, I’m worried he’ll reply with his fists. Dane’s always been a hothead, and up until now, Cole’s dealt with him pretty well. But everyone has their limits.

“How’s the scientist?” I ask, shifting the subject.

“Not talking,” Atticus replies.

“Suki has been translating nonstop,” Trent adds. “Looks like we were recruited by some dirty mother fuckers.”

“That should have been obvious with who they decided to recruit.” Dane glares at Blake.

“We’ve been over this—everyone who helped bring the sons of bitches down that built this place gets a spot.” Cole cocks his head to the side thoughtfully. “But…we should look deeper into the files to make sure everyone is legit. I want to know the people I’m rebuilding with, so we don’t have another mad scientist situation.”

And just like that, my life has just become infinitely more complicated.

Before we took over, we rarely talked about the lives we had before we were recruited, and many were surprised to find out that not everyone was military.

A few took umbrage to Blake and others Cole allowed to keep positions at the Keep, but no one took issue with me because they didn’t know the hole I was pulled from.

But now I risk exposure.

“If we’re digging through everyone’s records, then there’s some shit you’re guaranteed not to like in mine,” I say, deciding it was better to lay it all out.

Cole’s brow pinches. “And what’s that?”

“While I was in, I was charged and found guilty of…bad shit.”

“Specify the shit,” Cole returns.

“Killing an entire village.”

For a long minute, the entire table full of men just stares at me, as if they’re not sure if they should laugh.

It’s Trent that breaks the silence.

“Please tell me you didn’t just confess to killing a shit ton of men, women, and children.”

Dane smirks. “Looks like his sister’s going to be up for grabs after all.”

Unable to hold back, I lunge across the table, but before my fist can connect with Dane’s petulant grin, Gage throws me down, pinning my arms behind my back.

“You have thirty seconds to explain yourself,” he says through gritted teeth.
