“Might be time to take out the riff-raff,” Dane says. He’s always been a grumpy loner, so it’s not surprising that he has no qualms with killing off the rest of humanity.

Cole’s expression grows worried. “That’s not what we aim to do.”

“The repopulation agenda isn’t going to go so well without bitches to fuck, and by annihilating these asshole mother fuckers, we can free some up,” Dane snarls, and while I’ve never gotten along with him, I can hardly fault him for his frustration, because if it hadn’t been for my desire to find Brooke, I would have scoured the city for the chance to get my dick wet.

“We’ll discuss this back at the Keep, but right now, we need to get the girls to safety,” Cole says. “We touched down at the square two blocks south. Should be an easy trip back.”

I find the key to release Brooke from her shackle, and as everyone convenes at the entrance, she approaches the girl that is clinging to Alistair like Saran Wrap.

“Hi, I’m Brooke. It sucks meeting you like this, but I’m glad you’re here.”

“I’m…I’m Britney,”the girl says.“Are…are they going to hurt us?”

“No, but if you harbor any longings for freedom, you can kiss them goodbye.”

“Let’s not use Gabe’s sister to recruit,” Dane says darkly.

“She’s not my sister!”

“Enough!” Cole snaps. “We’ll sort this out back at the Keep.”

A RECKONING

GABRIEL

After dropping Brooke and Britney off to get inspected, Cole gathers who he can and we meet in the command post.

Gage, Blake, Dane, Alistair, Atticus, Trent, Hunter, Cole, and I take places around the War Room table. Cole brings up a map of the city on a screen that spans an entire wall. It’s sectioned off into the districts we’ve set with various notes written regarding their condition.

Cole starts with, “I don’t think I need to tell you how precarious our situation has become. The streets are more dangerous than ever, the world has more biological time bombs in store for us, and Gabe may have just started a goddamn war.”

“A war?” I chuckle darkly. “Is that what we’re calling it? Those men had no qualms feeding a perfectly healthy woman to the dead. You should thank me for taking out the trash.”

“You’re right, they were trash, but there were a dozen better ways to handle that situation. The moment you heard where they were keeping your sister—”

“She’s not my sister!”

“Fine—it doesn’t change the fact that you should have waited for backup. I could have negotiated.”

“With scum?”

“Lowtown is growing. It can’t be ignored, and sometimes there’s a place for scum in society. I had a mole giving me intel, but the shit you pulled got him killed.”

My mouth gapes.

“You think anything goes on in this city that I’m unaware of? I assign your quadrants for a reason. To keep you guys away from the drama unfolding.”

“You knew about this club?” Dane says, his tone accusatory. “That they had women?”

“I was gathering intel on how many they had. I even took a trip out myself. There’s a whole section rebuilding, women lining the windows.”

Dane’s fist slams down on the table. “And you didn’t think to fucking tell us?”

“Son, these were not fine women. I was told the good ones were kept at the club, and I was planning to check it out myself, but then Gabriel shot the place up.”

“And I would do it again if I had to.”
