“I’m not really sure,” Russ says. “Irma thought it up, and it’s the best idea we’ve had.”

As much as I like Russ, and I respect the man greatly, I’m not about to fight his battles for him. Not for free, anyway.

“And what are you going to give us for Amber?”

Irma snickers. “You’ve already taken so much—”

“That was rightfully mine to begin with,” Selina snarks.

“Blake traded your farm away fair and square,” Russ spits back.

“Right now, we’re even.” I glare at Selina, who should know better than to open her damn mouth. “But if you want Amber, you’re going to have to pay. Dearly.”

“What is it you want?” Russ asks.

Nothing. There is nothing I would take in exchange for that girl.

“How about that sweet-looking brunette that served up coffee when we arrived?” Dane says.

Irma glares at him. “Her name is Polly, and she’s with Marcus.”

“Like I care who shewaswith,” Dane counters.

“Can we, for one second, stop treating women like a commodity?” Selina sneers.

Dane laughs mockingly. “I’m sorry if you thought you were something more.”

“Enough!” Russ growls, baring my teeth. “My daughter is out there, suffering God only knows what, and I need to know whether you can help.”

“I’d like to help,” I say. “But there needs to be an exchange.”

“You can take my daughter with you, and some others. Though not all my people would be keen on what I’m proposing.”

“Be more specific.”

“We have five pregnant women total that would be better in your hands. Three of them have partners—”

“We’re not taking men!” Dane snarls.

“They’re strong men. Good to have on your side.”

“Then why are you so eager to give them up?” I challenge.

“We’re not looking to overthrow whatever setup you have. I just want my daughter back and an alliance. Backup, if we ever need it. Right now, we’re closing in on three hundred people spread over two locations. Our resources will buckle if we’re not careful, and those eight people will be eight we won’t have to provide for.”

I don’t tell him that we are just a few dozen strong. A hundred more if you count the Vultures.

“There are a lot of men that wouldn’t mind this trade if we’re up two women,” Blake says.

I nod, though I don’t like the price I have to pay.

“And it’s not like Amber is giving up any information,” Blake adds. “She has some weird loyalty to them.”

“They could be family,” Russ says. “Which could make Gunther more apt to trade.”

Dane snickers. “Are we actually talking about trading a young, hot chick for a bunch of knocked up—”

Before Dane can finish his sentence, Russ rushes forward, punching him square in the jaw. He gets three shots in before Blake and two of Russ’s men pull him off.
