“You gave up the farm—”

“Blake gave up the farm. And while I admit I would have made the same decision, it’s still a bitter pill to swallow. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Keep, but fuck—sometimes you guys are assholes.”

“You shouldn’t be out wandering alone.”

She shrugs. “Russ keeps the dead away.”

“You heard Russ. It’s not just the dead we have to worry about.”

“I’ve been working with Clint. I can handle men twice my size.” She puts up her arms in a mocking martial arts pose.

“You’re pregnant.”

“And you’re overbearing.”

“Did you just come over to give me shit, or is there a reason you’re pestering me?”

She bites her lower lip, looking anxious. “Actually, I have an idea.”

“You think I give a fuck about your ideas?”

“In this case, I do. In fact, I know you will.”

ESCAPE

AMBER

Cole is playing Chess, while I’m stuck playing Checkers.

He’s simply out of my league.

What Cole just did to me is enough to shatter my soul. I want to give myself over to him completely, and I would, if it weren’t for Seth.

For the briefest moment in time, I let myself believe I belonged to him. And I’ll do it again. As I lie under Gunther, I’ll imagine the man that held me in the palm of his hands and made me forget how ugly the world had become.

But that feeling only went one way. The connection I thought was so strong, wasn’t there, and as soon as he shot his load, he left.

I wanted him to fuck me like he did his wife, because I wanted to mean something to him. He couldn’t do that, and I honestly didn’t care, because I liked the side of him he was showing me. I thought it was his way of claiming me—of owning me. I wanted so badly to be his ‘Kept’ woman that I fooled myself.

The bright side of my sad dilemma is that it’s created an opportunity. My hands are unbound now, and I have access to the entire tent.

I pull on my clothes and take note of what’s around me. A lantern run on batteries, protein bars, a CB radio, boring books that look like they’re read by old war generals.

Which makes sense with Cole being ex special forces, but I wouldn’t call him old. A year ago, I would have thought he was ancient. Now, he’s aged to perfection.

I wonder if Glenn, Seth’s father, would have ever made a good lover. He was a solid seven on the looks scale, and his personality was very beta. He’d probably try real hard but fall far short of Cole’s bedroom achievements.

I wonder how old his wife was and what happened to her. He must have loved her fiercely if he won’t claim another.

I’m discouraged by the lack of weapons. It’s not that I want to hurt someone, but if I have to face down a dead, I’d rather not do it barehanded.

The tent opens again, and I do my best to act casual.

Cole’s eyes narrow in accusation. “Why are you snooping around?”

“Because I’m curious.”
