“Well, get your look. We ain’t staying here long.”

Panic twists my gut. “Ah, why?”

“Russ had it in his head to trade you for his daughter. He’ll do anything to get her back. Selina raised some good points, and believe it or not, she convinced me to keep you around.”

“Keep me around?”

He closes the distance between us, cups the back of my head, and pulls me in for a kiss.

I’m shocked, because this isn’t Cole. He is all about base needs and scratching itches. When I asked him to fuck me like he did his wife, he was vicious, because he couldn’t be any other way.

And God help me, I melt.

His tongue pushes past my lips and I surrender to him, my bones turning to jelly. I lose track of time as he pillages my mouth, greedy for more of me, and when he finally pulls away, I whimper, because I’ll never have enough of him.

“You belong to me now,” he grits out.

My heart blooms.

He angles my head up to look at him and traces his thumb across my lower lip. “These lips are mine. Your body—mine. Your pink pussy—mine. I own you.”

“Yes…”I rush out, wanting so badly for it to be true.

“And when we get back to the Keep, you’ll be staying with me in my apartment. Eating the food I give you. Taking the pleasure I allow. You will be my everything, the reason I breathe, and I will kill every last mother fucker that seeks to do you harm.”

He wants to keep me…

Which is as beautiful as it is tragic.

Because I need to escape.

I force a smile onto my face. If this were real, it’d be plastered on. “You know being owned isn’t my style,” I tease, because I don’t need him suspecting anything.

“Thought you’d be fighting me a little harder.”

“I already know you’re going to do what you’re going to do, and you should know that I’m going to make it my mission to make your life hell. But at least now I’ll have good stress relief.”

His grin widens.

My heart breaks.

He pulls me close again, and I feel the hard bulge of his groin against my belly. It’ll be a good send-off. One last moment of euphoric bliss.

“Cole!” a shout carries through the small room.

Startled, I look over to see Blake’s head poking through the tent flap.

“What do you want?” Cole growls, his muscles tense from frustration.

“There’s a herd to the north. Came out of nowhere.”

“And you’re telling me Russ can’t hold down his own fort?”

“It’s…bad. All hands on deck kind of bad.”

“Jesus Christ.” He releases me and grabs his coat from a rack, pulling it on.

“Swords and bats are in the barn,” Blake says.
