Inwardly, I smile, because I know how desperately she wants to please him.
“If you give her a place in the main bed, what’ll stop others from acting out?”
“Acting out?” Gunther says. “She was taken, and kept our secrets well, from what I hear.”
“When I came to her, she wasn’t shackled. She could have left and chose not to.”
Gunther looks over at me. “Is that true?”
“I tried to run, but I only got a hundred feet into the forest before I was brought back,” I say, hoping he doesn’t sense that I’m lying. “I knew that if I ran again, I’d go worse for me.”
Gunther eyes me suspiciously.
“All I wanted was to make it back to my boy. I don’t care what you do to me. I just want my son.”
Gunther looks over his shoulder at Ralph, his second. “Get the boy.” Then he looks to another. “Bring Irma further down the shaft.”
“No! You can’t!” she cries out desperately. “I did what you said! Every last thing.”
“I don’t need you sowing discontent among the women.”
“But-but…”
Before she can get her words out, she’s dragged from the room to the men she wanted me fed to.
I don’t have it in me to feel bad for her. She brought it on herself.
A minute later, the door opens and Seth comes in. I squat, hoping he remembers me.
“Momma!” he cries, rushing into my arms.
“I’ve taken good care of him while you were gone,” Gunther says. “So I hope you don’t disappoint me.”
“I don’t know how much help I’ll be, considering I spent the entire time held in a cell.”
“A cell?”
“Yeah…I never got to see the inside of where I was kept, but if I had to guess, it was a prison.”
SMASH!
I crash to the floor, pain overwhelming my senses.
“Momma!”
Confused, I grab my head, trying to abate the pain.
Feet come towards me, and the fog lifts.
Gunther squats, grabs my hair, and yanks my head back violently.
“Tell me everything you know about Cole and his men, and if I sense that you’re lying,” he looks over at Seth, “eventually, it won’t be you I hit.”
