“Cole doesn’t give a fuck about Russ. You should have heard him bartering. His help didn’t come cheap, so why would he extend himself to avenge Russ when he doesn’t have to?”

“Ahhh, because you have his doctor.”

“He probably has more.”

I wouldn’t know. The entire time I was held captive, I never saw another doctor, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more.

It suddenly hits me that Cole may decide he doesn’t need Christine and forgo a rescue mission. While I’m sure he doesn’t want to leave her, during times like this, you mitigate risks.

And Gunther is a risk.

I’d love to think that I alone would be enough to go to war over, but he has people to think about. A lot of them. He’d be stupid to put them at risk for someone who’d once conspired against them.

I don’t deserve to be Kept.

After nearly an hour of walking, the rock wall holding the mine shaft comes into view, and from the darkness, a familiar voice calls out.

“Looks like my favorite little girl has returned.”

I can’t remember a time I’ve ever felt as much self loathing as I do walking into the shaft and making my way down the dimly lit hall.

Irma chatters to Gunther about our flight from the farm, fishing for compliments she’ll never get, because Gunther doesn’t appreciate women.

“Where’s Seth?” I ask impatiently.

“You’ll see him after you answer some questions,” Gunther says, his hand firmly pressed to my back.

“No, I get to see him now.”

“That’s not how things work around—”

“Let me make this clear: I haven’t seen my boy in months and there’s no way in hell I’m going to answer any of your questions without seeing him first.”

After a long moment, he says, “Very well. I’ll interrogate you with the boy present.”

While I hate the thought of Seth seeing me knocked around by Gunther, I need to see him. So I can hold him and smell him and see that he’s okay.

“Take the doc to the clinic we set up and make sure she’s fed well. No one touches her. She’s an honored guest.”

Abe, one of Gunther’s lap dogs, says, “Sure thing, boss,” and takes her away.

I’m pulled into a room further down. It’s bare, except for a single chair at its center.

Nothing good happens here.

“She put up a fuss,” Irma sneers. “She’s just not grateful. Not like me.”

“Oh, yeah? And what would you have me do about that?”

“Give her to the others. Not your trusted circle.”

If I thought my life was hell before, being tossed to the degenerates Gunther keeps under his wing would only make it that much more unbearable.

“Now, why would I do that? There’s not a girl down here nearly as pretty as she is.”

“But she ain’t loyal! And that’s what matters.”

“Says the woman who’s never turned a head,” Gunther chides.
