“Well, I’m doing my job as a Kept woman terribly.”

“With your disposition, I would think you’d be happier about that.”

“I am!” I snap. “Or…I was.”

“You like him, don’t you?”

“Would it disappoint you if I said that I did?”

“No. Why would you think that?”

“You’re all anti-Keep.”

“What’s going on here is egregious, but it is what it is and there’s no use pretending it’s something it’s not.”

“So, do you think I should fuck him or not?”

“I think that whatever you do, cling to what happiness you can. For all the shit I give the women here, they’re way happier than I am.”

I’ve never really thought of Christine and how she was holding up. I guess it’s because I’ve never felt on the same level as her, with all her accomplishments.

She’s a doctor, a genius one, if Gage speaks the truth, and I was still looking at colleges when the zombie apocalypse broke out. I guess being around her makes me feel like a kid.

“Why do you hate it here so badly when the other women love it so much?”

She chuckles dryly. “This isn’t where I’m supposed to be in life. Before the dead rose, I made a few unexpected breakthroughs in genetic research, and I was offered a job that was going to change everything. The way we treat disease. It was history in the making. Now...I’m sick bay.”

“You’re pretty much the most important person in this place.”

“I’ll keep Maisy here for a few days to see if she improves,” she says, changing the subject.

I get up to leave, but as soon as my hand closes around the doorknob, Christine yells, “Britney!”

I look over my shoulder. “Yeah?”

“Don’t feel bad about liking Alistair. Just don’t lose yourself in him. In this place. Like all the other women have.”

I nod, smiling respectfully, but deep down, I wonder if maybe it’s not the other women that are lost.

It’s that they’ve been found.

Chapter7

LET HER CALL THE SHOTS

ALISTAIR

Ifucked up.

I didn’t make a little blunder.

I blundered hard.

In the worst possible way.

Filled with rage over what Britney’s father did to her, I tortured the fucker. I hadn’t intended to, and I still can’t figure out what came over me. Hunter certainly didn’t help matters, though I can’t honestly shift the blame to him.

Trying to fill my time and lessen my burden, I’ve already worked out, showered, and now I’m fixing to watch a game.
