But my mind never leaves my troubles.

Not for long.

A knock sounds on the door, and I open it to find Dane on the other side.

“Why are you here?”

“Because most of the men are out on patrol and I need to get away from the sea of estrogen that seemingly everywhere.”

I step aside and he drives himself inside.

“Want a beer, or will it interact with your meds?”

“I’m off meds and could use a cold one.”

I lounge on the couch as he sits in his scooter off to the side, which is awkward as fuck. We’re still not sure if he will regain all of his capabilities. Lucky for him, Christine is next-level in the doctor department, and can learn complex treatments just by reading about them.

We watch old football games, and I have to admit, it feels good to be transported back to a time that wasn’t so chaotic.

Tailgating and cheerleaders used to be the highlight of the season. It’s a vibe I’ll never capture again.

God, I wish things weren’t so damn complicated.

“Looks like you came through for your girl,” Dane says during the halftime show.

“I guess.”

“And yet you still look miserable.”

“I screwed the pooch.”

“Hey, now. Britney may not be as hot as Georgia, but I’d hardly call her a dog.”

“If you weren’t sitting in that damn chair, I’d punch you for saying that.”

“Stop acting so goddamn sensitive and tell me what’s on your mind.”

Why not?

“I, ah, tortured Britney’s father, and she doesn’t know about it yet.”

“Oh…”

“It’s not like I intended to, but seeing him drunk, knowing what he did…” I run my fingers through my hair as guilt needles me.

But it’s not guilt. It’s worry. I’m glad I did what I did. I’m just upset because of how Britney will feel about it.

Dane shrugs. “Don’t tell her.”

“Of course you’d say that.”

“No need to get snarky. What good will come from telling her what you did to her pa? You think she’ll ever get over that? Will she even care? Heck, she ended up in a brothel taking…oh, shit.” He presses his eyes closed and curses under his breath. “Don’t listen to me, man.”

“No, it’s fine. It’s actually one of the least offensive things you’ve said, which says something. And it brings me to the other issue.”

He chuckles. “There’s another issue?”

“She’s still a virgin.”
