Page 5 of Cruel Bargain

It’s like a terrifying game of cat and mouse. The girl, who is chained, walks around the pole as the corpse follows.

And it’s at this moment that I realize men are worse than the dead. They’re a plague on humanity, worthy of all the hate and contempt I can muster.

On my life I vow never to trust one—never to show them mercy. I’ll kill every last one if I have to.

The others laugh and chatter as the girl wrestles with her shirt. Not that it will help. She’s chained to the pole without a weapon. There is no escape for her.

But just when I think she’s out of luck, she maneuvers behind the corpse and sends it flying towards us, over the stage, straight onto Frank.

He releases me.

“Jesus Christ,”he screams. “Someone do something!”

In the confusion, I rush under a table, hoping to evade danger.

Terrified, I watch the scene unfold. Men fight and scream, friends seemingly turning into enemies, and just as a man jumps onstage, shots ring out.

Men in black storm into the room, killing everyone except me and the girl.

It’s the Civil Police. The men that used to roam the streets.

In a moment of stupidity, I consider revealing myself. But having seen what men are capable of, I think better of it.

I’ll never be stupid enough to trust them.

When I think they’re distracted, I rush toward the door, hoping to escape.

Unfortunately, I’m not as stealthy as I’d thought, and a large man steps in my way.

“No!” I gasp. “No-no-no.”

Tears stream down my cheeks as I struggle to get past him.

“It’s okay,” he says, pulling me to his chest. “We won’t hurt you.”

I want to believe him, but I saw what happened on the stage.

The man takes me ever so gently to the exit where we’re joined by his friends. For some inexplicable reason, I cling to him like he’s a life raft when he very well could be the next bad thing in my life.

They talk amongst themselves, but I can’t comprehend what they’re saying.

The girl from the stage approaches. “Hi, I’m Brooke. It sucks meeting you like this, but I’m glad you’re here.”

While the situation I’m in is still dire and terrifying, something about the girl soothes me.

“I’m…I’m Britney,”I say.“Are…are they going to hurt us?”

“No, but if you harbor any longings for freedom, you can kiss them goodbye.”

ALISTAIR

She’s mine.

After months of looking, I’ve finally found my girl.

The queen of my castle.
