“I didn’t want to do this,” Hunter says, his voice barely above a whisper. “Not like I did with the others.”

“Wh-wh-what…” I try to speak, but my mouth fumbles.

“You’re going to go to sleep now, and when you wake up, you’re going to tell me the truth.”

Sleep? There’s no freaking way I’m stupid enough to fucking sleep with his crazy ass looking at me like that.

But as I try to arrange my thoughts, I lose focus. I can hardly think straight. My mind is jumbled.

Scrapes against the floor jar me. My vision blurs. The world isn’t right, but I can’t figure out why. I’m tired. So very tired.

Chapter13

CASPIAN

BRITNEY

“Ineed to see him—to talk to him!”

“I understand your desire to make this right,” Cole says patiently, “but he’s on a mission.”

“What mission?”

“I can’t tell you that.”

“And let me guess, you still don’t know when he’ll return.”

“You’ll be the first to know when he does.”

“Thanks for nothing!”

I storm out of the command post, where I go each day to ask about Alistair.

It’s always the same: “No, he’s not coming home today and we can’t forward your apology to him because it could compromise the mission.”

The other women are sympathetic towards me, but I know what they think: I drove him away.

It’s true.

And I’d do anything to take it back.

Standing at a distance, I watch Maisy interacting with the children of the Keep. She’s been a great help to Eva and every day she seems to get better.

She’s opted not to live with me, and we don’t hang out as often as I’d like. Christine says it’s because she’s been through trauma, and even though I’ve done nothing wrong, I’m a reminder of what happened on that terrible night, when the dead stormed the city.

“Hey, you!” Caspian calls.

I roll my eyes and return my gaze to Maisy, thankful she’s now safe.

Since Alistair left, he’s come onto me at least twice a week. He’s been encouraged to court one of the Reaver chicks, but most of the men are keeping them at arm’s length on account of their ill temperament and desire to kill everyone.

They’re worse than I was, and that’s saying something.

Caspian approaches, and I turn so I don’t have to look at his stupid face.

“What if I were to do you a favor?” His tone is playful, which sends a rush of fury through my veins. The nerve of him, flirting with me while Alistair is away.

“Like let me punch you?”
