“Like get you in contact with Alistair?”
I turn to look at him, wondering what he’s up to. There’s no way he can help me with that if Cole says no, which means he’s even worse than I’d thought.
I roll my eyes. “What? You want a blow job in exchange for letting me speak to him over the radio?”
“Something better.”
“The answer is no. He’s on a mission, and I don’t want to compromise that.”
“Except he’s not on a mission.”
I fold my arms over my chest. “Don’t fuck with me.”
“Is it so unbelievable that Alistair would want to remove himself from the Keep—away from you—after he’d admitted to torturing your father?”
A tight knot forms in my throat. “He wouldn’t…”
He gives me a cocksure grin, and for a moment, I consider slapping it off of him.
“What the fuck do you want?”
“I’m going to level with you. He is on a mission of his own making because he couldn’t stand to be around you anymore. I can’t radio out to him, but I know where he is, and I can bring you to him.”
I furrow my brow. “Bring me to him? That could get you executed.”
“It would, if I were to come back.”
“I don’t understand…”
“I’m not cut out for the Keep. Never was. I have a little place set up on the outskirts of the city. I have some supplies, but I need Alistair’s help.”
“What do you want from him?”
“He’s going to help me disappear. Once you’re reunited with him, he’ll owe me, and all I want in return is for him to tell the Keep I’m dead.”
“Why do you want to be dead?”
“Because I’m tired of living this goddamn life. It’s too much work and not enough fucking. Back at my other place, I already have a woman, but I can hardly see her with all the damn rules I have to follow. If I leave, I can be with her all the time.”
“Why not bring her here? Where it’s safe.”
“It’s safe enough out there if you’re cautious. Besides, she’s a wild woman and she won’t take well to being caged. She needs to be free.”
I never realized Caspian was so selfless.
If he’d wanted to, he could easily have her brought to the Keep against her will. Remi was drugged and brought in. Others had bags placed over their heads. But Caspian respects his girlfriend enough to let her stay free.
“Won’t the Keep think it’s weird that you brought me to Alistair?”
“That’s the beauty of it. After I hand you off to Alistair, you’ll radio out saying that you were kidnapped by me. They’ll believe it, because I’ve hit on you so much, they’ll think I wanted to fuck you. Other members of the Keep will show, and Alistair will tell them he had to kill me to save you. You’ll corroborate the story, and none of the guys will ask many questions because they’ll all want it to be true.”
“They want you dead?”
“One less man to claim one of the few women left.”
“I don’t know…”
“He’s not coming back. Not after how you treated him.”
