I look over at Caspian, who has his gun pointed at the other men.

“The Vultures belong to me now. Anyone that has anything to say about it gets to take it up with this.” He wags his gun from side to side. “We keep the plan, but it’s me who’s heading it.”

One of the men clears his throat. “Whatever you say, boss.”

“We’re on the same fucking side, so don’t get any ideas. You’ll only hurt yourself if you dare go against me.”

“We hear ya,” another man says, his hands in the air. “You don’t need to tell us twice.”

“You see this girl?” Caspian points his gun at me. “She’s mine until I say she’s not. If anybody touches her, they’ll see what it’s like being a rager.”

The men nod.

“Good news, though, because the moment we take the Keep, there will be plenty more to go around. Now take me to your base.”

Chapter14

NOT MY PROBLEM

ALISTAIR

My head throbs so badly, I think I might puke.

Where am I?

Thoughts slowly begin to form. Shadows of conversations. Impossibilities that seem so tangible.

Did I imagine it all? Britney? The dead?

It certainly doesn’t seem real. How could it be? The dead don’t rise. There has to be something wrong with my head.

I’m seated, my wrists bound behind my back with scratchy rope. I try to think back to what happened, but I draw a blank.

The Keep is real. It has to be. Either that or I died and went to hell. Oddly, that seems like the most plausible explanation. Maybe there was some terrorist attack, and I died, dooming me to live in this nightmare world.

“Why are you here?” a deadpan voice says.

It’s cold. Familiar.

Memories begin to piece together, but clarity eludes me. I try to lift my head, but my muscles hurt so bad I can hardly move.

Did the Vultures get me? Are the Reavers back? I never did kill Britney’s father, so maybe he’s decided to exact his revenge.

“I’m going to ask you one last time before things get serious: why are you here?”

Hunter!

“What the hell’s going on, man?” I try to make my voice casual, but I’m in too much pain. “I thought we were partners.”

I fight against my tense muscles to lift my gaze to his. He’s different now. There’s a fire lit behind his eyes that all but promises my death.

It’s not that I have much to live for, but the uncertainty of what he’ll do after I’m gone gives me cause to fight. I can’t let him hurt the women of the Keep.

I can’t let him harm Britney.

“At first, I bought your bullshit, no matter how nonsensical it was, but I’m no idiot. I know the others are out scouting viable locations while we’re in the worst part of town where no one goes.”

“Someone has gotta check it, and why not us? You drew the short straw getting partnered with me, because I’m not eligible for a companion. That’s why we were thrown in the worst part of the city.”
