“Hunter,”I say, my voice desperate. “Please, you gotta help me.”
He turns to me, his lip sneered. “You dare ask for my help after accusing me of the shit Caspian was doing?”
“It’s not for me. It’s for Britney. You know what they’ll do to her.”
“Not my problem.”
“If you help, Cole will owe you. Big time. He’ll give you all four of the Reaver chicks if you want them, and the chick we found in the wild.” Yeah, I’m spouting lies left and right, but I can’t help myself. Not with Britney in danger.
“The only thing I want is to be left alone.”
“We can do that too.”
Unknown:The guy’s talking about taking the Keep. Says we need to move quickly, before they suspect something.
“Jesus Christ, Hunter, you can’t turn your back on your people.”
“They aren’tmypeople.”
“I know how fucked up this is, and I regret how this went down. But the Keep needs you.” Wild thoughts stream through my mind of all the ways they’re hurting Britney. Of how I’ve failed her.
He looks down at the radio in his hand, scowling.
“I’ll owe you. Big. Just help me rescue Britney. Heck, you don’t even have to come with me, but let me radio to the Keep to warn them.”
Hunter presses TALK.
Hunter:What’s your location?

BRITNEY
Finding myself in the same situation I was in before I met Alistair is a tragedy of my own making.
If I hadn’t been so angry and defiant, I’d be happy right now, spending my days with a man who was truly and utterly devoted to me.
Instead, after Caspian is done with me, he’ll pass me to his friends. Just as Gunther had done with Amber and Frank was going to do with Brooke.
But Cole and Gabriel saved them.
There is no saving me.
After Caspian met with the Vultures, I was taken to another building a few blocks away. Once inside, I was rushed into the basement.
Surprisingly, the rooms are lit, and it’s not as run down as the other building was. They’re better organized than the Keep gave them credit for.
“Should I take her to the Pen and put her with the other hens?” a man asks.
Bile fills my throat. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that they think of women as livestock.
