“No. Have a room prepared for me and keep her in there. I’ll join her after I’ve addressed everyone.”

“Sure thing, boss.”

I’m taken by two men, one larger than the other, through hallways until we stop at a door.

“Does he expect us to clean it out for him?” big one asks.

The other shrugs. “Heck, if I know.”

In the sweetest voice I can muster, I ask, “Aren’t the Vultures supposed to be working with the Keep?”

“We were, till we heard they were fixing to double-cross us,” smaller one says.

“I’ve been at the Keep for months, and they’ve never said anything like that before.”

“Because you’re a woman and they don’t want you worrying your pretty little head off,” big one says. “But don’t worry. You’ll have it good here. We treat our women real nice. Just so long as they behave.”

My stomach twists because the last thing I want is to fuck these dirty men. And by dirty, I’m not talking about the good kind.

They’re filthy. I’m not entirely sure they’ve bathed once since the apocalypse broke out. Their hair is unkempt, and their clothes smell like shit.

“With any luck, you’ll be back with your friends soon,” smaller one says.

“Are you really planning on taking the Keep?”

Big one nods. “Any day now.”

“Don’t you worry, though.” Smaller one takes a step toward me and leans in to smell my hair. “We’re going to take good care of you. We don’t beat women, and we’ll feed you well.”

Big one opens the door to a small room that has junk scattered all around it. There’s a bed in the corner, which makes sense seeing as how Caspian wants one set up for him to stay in.

With me.

Because I fucked up.

“I don’t belong here,” I blurt, desperate for sympathy, because if I can get them to feel sorry for me, they might decide to help me out.

A sympathetic expression washes over big one’s face. “You’ll be fine—”

Think…you have their attention, say something!

“You don’t understand, Caspian is mean to women. He’s going to hurt me.”

They look at each other, their expressions uneasy. This is good because it means they’re uncomfortable with women getting beaten.

“He’s lying to you, just like he did to the people he was working with. Do you really think he’s going to let you fuck whoever you want if you take the Keep?”

“There’s a system—” big one starts.

“And I guarantee he’s going to shake it up, making people depend on him to get what they want. Whatever you have now, kiss it goodbye.”

Smaller one downcasts his eyes. “He did kill Fred when they were supposed to be negotiating.”

“He can get us the Keep, though,” big one reasons. “With all the women.”

“All the women?” I chuckle. “All, what, five of them?”

“Try dozens.”
