ALISTAIR

After we arrive back at the safe house, I take Britney into the bedroom so she can rest. Coming in from the roof was Cain’s idea, and while it was a good plan, having to climb down a rickety fire escape after all she’d been through has left her spent.

“I’m sorry,” she says, her voice tired. “I should have never left that night.”

I smile, though I know she might just be hopped up on adrenaline and other hormones. “We’ll talk later. Get some sleep.”

Exiting the room damn near kills me, but I need to settle things with Hunter, because right now, he’s more terrifying than any rager I’ve encountered.

“Your girl okay?” he asks, passing me a beer.

I give him a look to say, “seriously,” passing on the drink.

“It’s clean.”

“How about I not take your word for it?”

“Look, I’m sorry about what I did to you. If it makes any difference, I didn’t want to hurt you, but I needed answers.”

I believe him, but I don’t think the Keep will, and even if I don’t tell Cole about him drugging and tying me up, he’ll still be made to answer for his crimes.

Which are fucking mind-boggling.

“We need to talk, Hunts.”

“I helped get your girl back,” he huffs. “Isn’t that enough?”

“It’s not about that, actually.”

“Then what’s going on? Caspian was the Vulture’s inside man, and you know for a fact I ain’t making that up.”

“The Keep knows.”

His eyes downcast knowingly. He gives a slight nod.

“They found your file from before the dead rose. You know, the one where you were charged with killing a shit-ton of people.”

“I guess they were bound to.”

“I don’t know why you did what you did, but I can’t turn you over after you helped get Brit back. I owe you.”

“What are they going to do to me?”

“They’re thinking about execution, but the group is divided and Cole doesn’t take death lightly. I was sent to assess the situation.” I open the beer despite my reservation and take a sip. “Maybe it’d be better if they thought you were dead.”

“You sure you wanna lie for me?”

“You helped me get my girl, and I fully intend to repay the debt, but we can’t involve her in this.” I look towards the bedroom door. “We’ll say that we were out getting supplies and I heard you scream. When I looked, I couldn’t find you.”

“That works.”

“Can I ask a question?”

“You can, but I may not answer.”

“Who’s Fiona?”

His eyes snap to mine. “Where did you hear that name?”
