“Then why are you with them?”
“Reasons. Now let’s get you up to the roof.”
“The roof?”
“If they believe they’re being bombed, it’s the safest place to go.”
I allow Cain to lead me from the room, down halls, up stairwells, but our luck stops when we run into a cluster of three men.
They look me up and down, their eyes hungry. “What are you doing with her?”
“Found her wandering. Thought I’d take her with me so she—”
The butt of a gun crashes down on Cain’s face, and he drops to the floor.
“Oh, shit!” I cry out.
“Why’d you do that?” a man with facial tattoos says.
The guy that assaulted Cain squats to look at him. “Something’s up.”
“You think Cain stole her? Why would he do that?”
“Pussy. Speaking of, mayhap we should reward ourselves.”
One of the men grabs me and throws me against the wall. “God, you’re precious.”
His hands yank at my shirt. I try to fight him off, but he’s impossibly strong, and even if I could, two other men are looking on, licking their lips and waiting for their turn.
The man’s hand cups my breast. “I bet your pussy tastes real nice—”

The man falls to his knees, then slumps to the floor. The other men turn, drawing their weapons.

A few stairs up, I see two men in black with shields over their faces.
Keepers!
One slowly approaches, but I back away, afraid, because Caspian was a Keeper once.
The man lifts the shield on his helmet, and I see Alistair looking at me, a relieved expression on his face.
I rush into his arms, savoring what I can of him.
“Cain gets up, rubbing his bloodied nose.”
“You okay?” Hunter asks him.
“Fucking nose is broken, but this works to my advantage. Just get the girl to safety, and remember what you promised.”
