I stared into her eyes, and the words poured from my soul like lyrics to a song that never had a melody until now. Until Ruby. “I give you my heart, my protection, and my life.”

She cupped my cheek, searching my eyes. “This bond…it’s real.”

I nodded slowly. “It is for me.”

She worried her lower lip. “What are we going to do?”

I shook my head. “We’re not talking about rules. No packs or covens tonight, remember?”

She searched my eyes. “Does that mean you’re spending the night?”

I hadn’t thought that far ahead. I didn’t want to think about anything but her. I grudgingly pulled back, sliding free of the warmth of her body. “I’ll be right back.”

In her bathroom, I slid the condom off and dropped it in the trash can. I placed my hands on either side of her sink, eyeing myself in the mirror. I was going to be the Alpha. I needed to be unifying my pack and gaining their support. I should be at the farm. But I wanted to stay with Ruby.

I struggled to push the thoughts away and stay in the moment. But there would be questions from Mathias and the pack in the morning if I wasn’t there.

Sighing, I straightened from the sink and went back to the bedroom. Ruby was under the covers now. Her long brown hair spilled over the gray pillowcase. My pulse raced just looking at her. I got in bed and pulled her into my arms. She rested her head on my chest, her fingers idly caressing my skin.

I lifted my head from the pillow and kissed the top of her head. “What are you thinking?”

“Feeling.” She chuckled and peered up at me. “Water witch, remember?”

I ran the back of my fingers along her jawline. “I hope you’re feeling spent.”

“Definitely.” She nodded with a sexy smile. “I’m also…” Color crept up her neck. Was she embarrassed about something? We’d just had sex. Lots of it. What was there to be shy about? She rolled her eyes. “I’m a little infatuated with you. Well, obviously, I’m naked in bed with you.” She paused, and her grin widened. “I feel like there are little hearts floating over my head. What about you?”

This conversation was very good for my ego, although my pack brothers would probably say it didn’t need any more encouragement. I tucked her hair behind her ear, losing myself in her eyes. “I was just hiding in your bathroom trying to figure out what the hell I’m going to do tomorrow because the only place in the world I want to be is with you.”

“Wolf instincts?”

I thought about it for a second and chuckled as the realization hit me. “It definitely intensified after my wolf recognized you, but there was something about you that intrigued me from the moment we met. When I asked you to meet me for a drink in trade for returning Lillian’s crystals, that was all me. My wolf wasn’t even paying attention to the sexy witch who had caught my eye.”

She laughed and settled back onto my chest again. Our legs tangled together under the covers and holding her in my arms felt…right. She was made for me.

“You may have noticed I’m not a big fan of werewolves, but…I felt safe with you from the start.”

I ran my fingers along her back. “And you always will be.”

Nate scratched at the bedroom door, and she looked up at me. “Be right back.”

She slipped out of my arms and disappeared into the bathroom. When she came out, she crossed to the bedroom door and let her little dog inside. Nate came racing over and hopped right up on the bed. He stared at me, and I swore his face was saying,What the fuck are you doing inmybed withmyRuby?

I patted the blanket beside me, and he came up closer. I scratched behind his ears. “Were you lonely out there?” He licked my cheek, and I chuckled, looking up at Ruby. “Does that mean I’m forgiven now?”

She shrugged. “I think he’s buttering you up to let him sleep with us.”

I put my hands up in mock surrender to the toothless chihuahua. “I’m not trying to take over your territory.” I eyed Ruby. “Just your woman.”

She laughed as she got back into bed and snuggled in my arms. Nate dug at the covers down by our feet until he made a suitable pile to curl up in. By the time he settled, Ruby’s breathing had slowed to a steady rhythm. I peered down at her sleeping face, memorizing every curve and angle. My mate. She was a miracle.

I wanted to learn everything about her. But first I needed to find a way to avoid the future she glimpsed. I’d start with calling General Sloan tomorrow. Maybe he’d heard of the law firm, and hopefully he could tell me if any witches had been bitten and converted into werewolves. I’d plan my next steps based on his answers.

Until then, I needed some sleep.
