She laughed. “I’ll see you at noon.”

“See you then.” I ended the call and got Nate undressed and fed.

Upstairs, the water shut off. And suddenly all I could think about was Zeke naked and wet. This infatuation was no joke. I climbed the stairs, and as I entered my bedroom, he came out with a towel wrapped around his waist.

I shook my head. “My timing is superb.”

He grinned. “If I didn’t have to haul ass to the farm, I’d be trying to lure you back to bed.”

“If I didn’t have to open the store in an hour, I’d already be getting naked again.” I headed into the bathroom, but the mirror was fogged up. When I came back out the towel was long gone, giving me a nice view of his ass as he pulled on his underwear.

He grabbed his pants and straightened, looking back at me. “Do we need a cover story for last night?”

Reality. I sighed. “Probably. Lillian was worried. I missed a text and a call from her.”

Zeke checked his phone and dropped it on the bed. “No one called me. Maybe they didn’t notice I never came home. I could pick up a couple dozen donuts and tell everyone I got up early.”

It could work. No one had to know we just broke all the rules.

He zipped his jeans and tugged his shirt over his head. “Can I meet you someplace for dinner after the shop closes?”

I nodded without hesitation. “Sure. How about the Howling Wolf Taqueria at seven thirty?”

“Love that place,” he grinned. “I’ll call General Sloan today and let you know if he’s ever heard of the law firm or any other witches being bitten.”

“Be careful. He knows Lillian and Mathias. Do you think he’ll say anything to them?”

Zeke paused and finally shook his head. “I’ll come up with a cover story for Sloan. I could be trying to make sure I know all the boundaries before I become Alpha.”

“And I’ll see if Lillian knows anything about Hinterland and Bloodstone, too.” I couldn’t ask her about any witches ever being bitten. She’d have questions, and as Zeke had already noticed, I wasn’t a great liar.

He came over and wrapped his arms around me. I breathed him in, closing my eyes as I ran my hands up his chest. He kissed my hair and whispered, “Call me if that PI comes sniffing around again, or…for anything.”

I pressed a kiss over his heart and looked up into his eyes. “I’ll see you tonight.”

He bent and brushed his lips to mine, slow and tender, and my pulse raced as he drew back with a smile. “’Til tonight.”

“Be careful.”

He nodded as he went to the door. He looked back over his shoulder. “We’ll figure this out. I promise.”

His footsteps echoed on the staircase, and then the front door opened and closed.

He was gone. And suddenly my house felt empty. It made no sense. No one had slept over with me in more than a year.

But that didn’t seem to matter.

Nate jumped on my legs, and I picked him up, holding him in front of my face. “What’s happening to me, little man?”

He licked my cheek, drawing a chuckle from my lips.

“Glad you love me anyway.” I set him down on the bed. “Mama’s a big rule breaker now. I know, you’re shocked.”

He gave me a quality head tilt as I went into the bathroom to get ready for work. Hopefully the Crow’s Nest would be busy today so I wouldn’t be checking the time every five minutes like a teen with a crush.

As promised, Lilliancame by with two Monte Cristo sandwiches from Red’s. My eyes widened as my belly grumbled her praises. “Wow, you went all out. I would’ve been happy with grilled cheese.”

“I know.” She grinned. “But I thought planning your ascension should be a celebration.”
