“No, they’re old news!” She sneers, finally becoming completely visible. She’s wearing a long red jumpsuit. And her hair is down. What used to be long and blonde was now white. What used to be full of curls, was now straight. And her wrinkles were starting to deepen with her age as they lay prevalent over her face. Alongside the crude scar above her right eye. Her days as the head honcho of the Giordio family were numbered… “I mean the Lorenzo and the Morino families.”

“So you want me to infiltrate two families?” I ask. “For what?”

“It disappoints me that you don’t know more about them…” she sighs, her heels clanking as she paces in front of me. “They’ve completely taken over Chicago,” she says. “But more families are moving in… and I think they’ll be vulnerable.”

I sigh. Or on the biggest guard of their entire reign. “I think we can take them… and then I can take Chicago,” she urges, looking at me square in the face. There’s something about her tone that seems…desperate.

“Why do you even want Chicago?” I pipe. We have a perfectly good territory here in Detroit.

“Because I do,” she bites, warningly. No one questions Madam Rosa after all.

I shake my head. “As you wish…” I grumble. “You calling me means you want me to take someone out. So who is it?”

“You’re going to kill Aria Morino-Lorenzo. And then when the families’ guard is down, we’re taking Chicago.”

Everything had been going to plan.

I weaseled my way into being a bodyguard for the family after just a few nights of staking out. It was clear that Aria was tough. It was even more clear that no one questioned her authority.

I knew women like that.

I knew them well.

She and Madam Rosa seemed similar in that aspect.

So when I saw Reggie lose three nights in a row and making threats to talk to the Boss, I knew it was a matter of time. I followed him to the office, and stood outside as soon as it got heated. How about my luck? It was the perfect opportunity to gain her trust.

I was one of five personal bodyguards to Aria. The Queen of Chicago.

And everything was falling into place. I was gaining her trust…

That is, until I was almost killed in the scramble. I couldn’t help but wonder if Madam Rosa had concocted some sort of deal with the Colombos. Their timing was… convenient.

I’d barely made it out alive.

And likely to Madam Rosa’s chagrin, I escaped with Aria in tow.

“Put me down,” she grumbles as she writhes in my arms.

I dropped her. Not so gently.

She’s probably the most pesky assignment I’ve ever had.

She sighs with relief as soon as her feet hit the ground with a thud. “I like it rough…” she muses before patting me on the shoulder.

There’s something about her that makes me feel at home.

I’m not sure if it has to do with the fact that she’s a strong woman like my mother, or if it’s the fact that she’s got a similar sort of… humor….

Whatever it is, I’m comfortable.

I actually kind of enjoy protecting her.

Too bad that’s all temporary. Too bad I’m going to end up killing her.

When Madam Rosa wants it, Madam Rosa gets it.

One way or another.
