From the corner of my eye, I see her scramble out from underneath him, wrapping herself into a robe. “Noah, it’s not what it looks like, I–”

“Have cum in your hair,” he says, filling in her sentence. “Well, this is a relief.” Turning to me, he asks, “I can get an annulment now, right?”

“Already being drawn up,” I state.

“What? No! We can work this out, Noah. I love you, I–”

“You’re pregnant with another guy’s kid, Samantha. There isn’t anyworking this out.” He turns to leave, and then stops, giving her one last look. “And I fucked your dad, so. Pretty sure this wouldn’t have worked anyways.”

“Alright Mr. Donahue,” Scott cheers, ever the unserious lad that he is. “Nice lay.”

“Pleasure, as always, Scott,” I drawl. “Come to the rink on Monday, and we’ll get you set up with a job that you can manage so that you can provide for your child. Yes?”

He gives a goofy smile. “Right on.”

“Dad!” Samantha cries. “How could you–”

“We’ll discuss this later. Return your wedding gifts to your guests. Don’t be tacky and keep them, darling.”

At the end of the hotel hallway, Noah stands. Noah, beautiful even in the wake of the chaos he just witnessed. Noah, the pretty boy who’s too young for me, and yet he’s the only person I want. The only person I need.

He turns to me at the sound of the door slamming shut, and I can’t quite read the look on his face. After a beat of silence, he asks, “You knew?”

I open my mouth to explain, and he holds up a hand, not wanting to hear it.

“You knew about him, and you let me marry her anyway? You knew about them, and you what? Thought it would be a good opportunity to seduce the poor fool your daughter tricked? What the fuck is this? Who does that?”

“I didn’t exactly need to work hard toseduceyou, Noah.” It’s the wrong thing to say, really. I’ve said it, and I can’t take it back. I do that a lot.

He rears back as if I’ve slapped him. Pointing a shaky finger at me, he huffs. “Fuck you. And fuck your twisted family.”

He moves to turn, spinning towards the elevator. “I didn’t know,” I say, and he halts. “I thought Scott was history, and I didn’t know about the pregnancy. Not until after the wedding was already over.”

He scoffs. “I don’t care about the goddamn wedding. But you knew before you fucked me, didn’t you? You’re just as bad as she is.”

An ache cracks in my chest. “Come on, Noah. Don’t make last night into something it wasn’t. You wanted it, I wanted it. I’ve wanted it since I first saw you.”

He turns, throwing his hands up. “Am I supposed to feel bad that you pined for me, for what? Two weeks?

“Two years!” I blurt out.

Shock paints his features. “What the hell are you talking about? We met twoweeksago.”

“You metmetwo weeks ago, I’ve been seeing you for years, superstar.” I’ve been watching his career on the field since his sophomore year at St. Monroe University. “So yeah, I took the opportunity that presented itself to me. I’m not sorry for it, and I won’t apologize.”

His face softens, but his distance doesn’t change. “Then don’t apologize,” he tells me. “I’m not even mad. I got what I wanted, you got what you wanted, and now we’ll never have to see each other again.”

“And that’s what you want? To never see me again?”

He takes a step back. “Yeah. That’s what I want, Henry.”

He’s gone before I can beg him to stay.

But he’s wrong. I’ll see him again. I’ll always see him again.
