Freshly single, and newly happy, I step into the shiny office building. I feel like a bit of an imposter in this business attire, but at least a tie isn’t required. My throat isn’t being strangled and I can breathe easily for what feels like the first time in forever. Even as content as I am, there’s still the nagging sensation of something missing.Someonemissing.

“Mr. Hamilton?”

I stop at the sound of my name, looking to the left. A small woman with umber skin and a bright smile gives me a shy wave. “I’m Kim,” she tells me. “I’m from HR, I’ll be showing you to your desk and taking you around the office for introductions.”

“Nice to meet you, Kim.” We shake hands, and she gestures to the silver doors of the elevator. “Nice to meet you as well.”

Kim tells me about the company a little bit more as she gives me a tour, stopping to introduce me to colleagues as we go. They all seem very excited to meet me, and most of them have seen me play before, which is sort of cool. “So you’ll be working mostly with the top floor team. It’s usually a work your way up kind of company, but obviously experiences come in different forms. I think you’ll be great working with recruitment and development.”

“Thank you, I’m still kind of surprised that I found this job. It’s basically everything that I’ve been thinking about doing, all in one.”

She smiles bigger. “Oh that’s just great isn’t it? I love when things work out.” Her hands go to her hips and she nods. “Well, I’m going to take you to the boss's office, and he’ll let you know what you’re doing to start. Any more questions for me?”

“No, you’ve been great, thank you again.”

“My pleasure, really,” she insists and leads the way. Stopping at a set of double oak doors, she gently knocks on them. “Go right in, he’s expecting you. I’ll come check on you at the end of the day.”

She leaves before I can thank her for a third time.

I open the doors and the air in my lungs is whooshed out. Brown eyes, dark hair, stubble, and a daunting frame fills my field of vision. It can’t be, and yet it is.

“Henry,” I say, my heart already beginning to frantically beat.

“Noah,” he says in return.

Henry is my new boss. I don’t need to be a betting man to put money on the guess that he’s somehow planned this. He knew what I wanted to do with my degree, and he’s given it to me on a silver platter. Yet, I want to leave. To flee and continue to punish him with silence, but my legs won’t move, not an inch.

“You’re thinking about it, aren’t you?” He nods to the door at my back. “About running away and finding a new job? About avoiding me for the rest of your life?”

“Yeah,” I choke. “I am.”

“Well, don’t.” His lips twitch. “You won’t be able to hear my apology in the lobby.”

“I told you I don’t need an apology.”

“You did.” He nods. “I decided that you don’t know what you need.”

A laugh bubbles from me before I can stop it. “Of course you did.”

“Sit,” Henry insists, looking to the chair in front of his desk. “We should talk.”

“Should we?”

“We really should.”

A brow lifts. “Why should I hear you out?”

He smirks. “Because you want to see me as much as I want to see you. If you didn’t, you’d already be gone.”

Cautiously, and stubbornly, I warn, “I’m not going to be your plaything, or whatever. Just because you apologize.”

“No,” he agrees. “You’ll be so much more than that, Noah. So much more.” When I don’t move to sit, he sighs. “Iamsorry. I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you what I knew before I put your cock in my mouth.” My eyes widen, but he doesn’t stop. “I’m sorry that you felt deceived by me. But would you like to know what I am most apologetic for?”

“Yes?” I ask nervously.

“I amtrulysorry that I allowed you to walk away for so long. I wanted to give you time, and I should have given youmeinstead.”
