That came out of leftfield. Much like Nella’s question to me earlier had, too. What’s with the women in my life asking me hard questions like this today?

“I mean it, Killian. The first thing you complain about is not the fact that you were shot at, but the fact that your time with Nella was interrupted. Your date with her, might I add.”

“...So?”

She rolls her eyes at me. “I think you have feelings for her.”

I sit up suddenly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You don’t need to because I’m telling you. It’s obvious. I just haven’t said anything because I didn’t think you’d be this much of a bonehead about it.”

My mouth drops open slightly. Even with Ava’s sharp tongue, she’s never called me a…boneheadbefore.

“Wow…”

“Yeah, remain shocked.” She rolls her eyes again. “What are you so afraid of anyway? Who cares if you have feelings for her? It’s not like she’s running back to her family anytime soon.”

I press my lips together. While that may be true, how am I supposed to know where my obsession ends and my… feelings for Nella truly begin? Were they even different things at this point?

Yeah, I made sure she was comfortable here by doing heavy research into figuring out who she was. As well as her likes and dislikes. Her hobbies, getting her the damned cat.

Did that really mean I had feelings for her?

“Killian.”

I sigh. “I don’t know. I mean… I have done a lot of things for her.”

“Yeah,” she says in aduhtone. “Killian, you like her. More than I’ve ever seen you like someone before. You need to get it through your head. Accept the facts. Come to terms with the inevitable.”

Ava’s words rattle inside of my brain. I did have feelings for her, didn’t I? Of course, then that would also mean that I needed to be okay with letting Nella go if she didn’t feel the same way for me. Could I do that? Let her go if she asked me to?

I bite the inside of my cheek, my stomach tightening at the thought.

If she were to ask me about it after all this is over, I actually might let her.

Even though every part of me would be screaming not to.

All I wanted was for her to be happy. And if that meant letting her go, then… maybe I would.

“You look deep in thought.”

I sigh again. “I am. I’m coming to realize that I may need to let her go at some point. If she asks me to.”

“Let her go—?” Ava quickly jumps up, grabbing one of the pillows next to her and smacking me hard with it. “Who are you, and what have you done with my cousin?”

“Ow Ava.” I grab it away from her and toss it across the room. “Enough with the violence.”

She gives me a pointed look.

“You’re changing.”

I roll my eyes at her. “Maybe. Is that such a bad thing?”

Before she can answer me, I hear the stairs creak as Nella descends them.

“I can hear you guys arguing. What’s going on?”

I shoot Ava a hard look before looking over at Nella, taking in her robed form and wet hair.
