“Oh,” Enzo pauses, putting his hands on his hips, “that is something that we need to think about.”

“I just wanted to bring it to your attention in case—”

A voice interrupts us. “In case of what exactly?”

We both turn at the same time, spotting Ava coming in from the backyard. She treads over to us calmly and stands directly next to Enzo, her hip jutting out in a way that makes me think that they’ve definitely taken their flirtation to the next level.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Ava shrugs, her blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail that sways with her movement.

“All I’m saying,” she eyes both of us, “is that there better be no unnecessary sacrifices.”

Enzo and I don’t say anything, both of us knowing that if it really came down to it, we would be the first to go. It’s what happens when you run a mafia. The boss goes in guns ablazing to protect the family.

Going down with your ship is an honorable death if I ever saw one.

“Oh.”

I look over to see Nella descending the stairs from the top floor. I lift an arm for her, smiling softly when she walks over to me and presses her body against mine. Wherever this road is taking us, I know that at least I will have her by my side.

Even if it may be only for a few more days, considering the two people we were going up against.

“How are all the men getting along?”

The three of us let out varying stages of groans.

Enzo crosses his arms. “They’re getting along as best as they can for now.”

Nella nods. “That’s all we can ask for at this point—”

She turns her head, eyes narrowing.

I pull back from her to look at her face. “What?”

“Do you hear that?”

“Hear what?”

Nella steps away from me. Her head tilts up towards the ceiling while she walks around with her ear cocked.

“Nella?”

“Shhh! Listen.”

All of us exchange looks.

“There’s a beeping sound?”

Enzo frowns. “A beeping sound?”

“Yeah, it’s—”

She doesn’t get to finish her sentence.

Nella screams as the windows around us shatter, the force of which blows us all across the room. My body slamsinto the back of something hard before slumping over and collapsing to the ground. My eyes ring from the shock of the noise, my brain gradually realizing that Nella had indeed heard the sounds of a bomb.

I open my eyes slowly, the world a dizzying chaotic mess with clouds of dust filling the air.
