A gun is trained on me by none other than Edgar Thomas.

Behind him, I spot Marco.

“Look what we have here. All the traitors in one place. How convenient…”

My heart stops.

Marco steps around Edgar, unhooking the gun from his hip, regarding Enzo with a cool expression.

“I’ll be savingyoufor last.”

I don’t give any of them a chance to think any more than they have. I grab the knife clipped to my hip and toss it at Nella, my other hand pulling my gun out and flicking the safety off in one go.

I stand and point it directly at Marco’s head.

He simply laughs at me. “All this work you’ve done to undermine me, Killian. Only to get in bed with traitors. What does that say about you, hm?”

“Enough talk,” I growl.

Marco ignores me, continuing with, “Both of my children—traitors! You’ve brought shame to my name.”

The man sighs, his shoulders caving in with what looks like a moment of despair. It sickens me that he has been so caught up in his delusions to not realize that he’s been terrorizing his own children for their entire lives.

Behind me, Nella stands. Her knife clutched tight in her hand.

When Edgar spots her, he waves her over with his gun.

“Come. Let’s make this quick.”

Marco chimes in again, “None of you have any chance of survival. We have the entire place surrounded. We might as well make this whole endeavor as painless as possible.”

I shake my head. “Don’t move.”

Behind me, Nella stiffens.

I fire off a round behind Marco and duck behind the couch again, pulling Nella with me to the floor. She lets out a gasp, grabbing my shoulder with her free hand. I lift my head up just in time to see Edgar cocking his gun and shooting right at the couch. I press Nella down to the floor, putting my body over hers while bullets whizz by us.

“Shit!” I hear Marco yell out.

There are more gunshots that come from back where Enzo is, a total of three of them before the sound of a body hitting the floor can be heard. I feel my heart pound and pray that it isn’t Enzo. Another loss would devastate Nella.

I twist to look over where the body has dropped.

It’s Edgar.

Blood pools around his head, thick and ruby-colored.

I dart over to where Enzo is, seeing Ava’s hand wrapped around the man’s shoulder and pressing him down against the floorboards. Her gun raised while she pants.

Goddamn, I’m proud of her.

Marco curses again and stalks over towards them, firing off a round and shooting the gun right out of Ava’s hand. She winces as blood spatters from where the bullet hits. She drops the weapon and clutches her palm to her chest.

Marco kicks her away from his son and grabs him by the throat, slamming him against the wall. Enzo grapples at his father’s hand, choking he clamps tighter and tighter around his neck, turning his face purple.

“You are my biggest disappointment.”

I stand, holding my gun up and training it right on the back of Marco’s head. Thousands of thoughts race through my head. My own father’s voice plays through my mind. Memories come flooding past. The times when I laughed and learned under him. My devastation at finding his body.
