I heard my furious promise to him.

That I would end this the way it started.

That I would avenge him with a bullet through Marco’s head.

“Marco,” I call to him, steeling myself.

He turns to me, anger pinching his face.

I smile, cruel and cold, channeling as much of ‘The Dark Prince’ as I can. I flex my finger over the trigger, pulling it the second that his forehead is lined up with the end of my muzzle.

The shot goes directly between his eyes, his body jolting back from the force of it.

Enzo jumps away, putting his hands out to cover his face while blood splatters everywhere.

Marco’s body slumps to the floor, a kind of finality to it that somehow relieves and disturbs me.

A strange silence settles around us.

Nella’s the first to speak. “Is he…?”

I nod, watching the blood pool around Marco Ambrosino’s body.

“He’s dead.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

Things moved pretty quickly after that.

With my father now dead and the title of Don now up for the taking, Enzo gladly stepped into the role he had been born to inherit. It’s nice seeing my brother finally thrive without our father’s cruelty looming over him.

His first act as Don was to get rid of the bodies and burn them somewhere on the property so no one would come looking once they found out that he had taken over.

I couldn’t help but agree with that, even though burning our father made me slightly ill. Transfers of power are always delicate matters, and no one can know Enzo had anything to do with his demise except us, and the trusted men he brought along with him.

He kindly offered me a position to work alongside him on our ride back into the city, but I refused. The only reason I wanted in was to please someone who didn’t deserve it after all.

Killian and his men remained helpful while we got our affairs in order. He even went as far as to lend some of his more loyal associates to us in order to get us both back to the manor without any hassle.

They kept a low profile though, not wanting to stir up any more rumors about the Irish and the Italians helping one another when they had previously hated each other so much.

Making their business contacts worry unnecessarily wasn’t in the strategy plan, anyway.

After my dad died, I felt like I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted. So, I’ve remained at Killian’s penthouse for the time being. I need to be out of the way as much as possible while Enzo gets fitted for his crown.

Thankfully, by the time we’d gotten back to the house, Killian had sent a crew over to clean up the mess that Edgar had left, along with installing cameras around the perimeter in order to keep an eye on everything at all times.

Now that my family has gone through some internal changes, there was no telling what kind of people would come out of the woodwork, upset and ready to cause problems. Still, Enzo had been groomed to take over, he’s the eldest son, so his claim to the Ambrosino empire is undeniable.

Even after all of this, Killian had given me a silk box with Leo’s remains inside. My heart still hurt thinking about my precious cat, but I had at least gotten the opportunity to bury him and lay him to rest like I’d wanted to.

He now gets to spend the rest of eternity in the townhouse’s beautiful backyard.

Now that I felt more comfortable going about my day, no longer hounded with worry over Enzo, Edgar or my father, I settle into an easy rhythm. I help Killian and Ava where I can, and I take care of the things that they can’t see to, like grocery shopping and taking care of the house.

I’ve even gotten to witness Ava’s infamous poison creations—which scared the shit out of me.

It was only about a week later that I finally got the chance to talk to Killian.
