The knocking on my door had me sitting up instantly. I checked my phone for the time and saw the missed calls and messages.

God it was only one in the morning.

Who the hell was knocking on my door right now?

Part of me was hoping it was Jolie but I knew that was impossible. She’d never get past my security team. It was the reason I knew I was safe from retribution from the Caldwell’s, especially Tyler who had been increasingly annoying of late.

By the time I moved to the door, I knew who it would be. Once I opened the door, my assumption had been proven as I looked over at the brunette I didn’t want to see.

“Rose, what brings you by?”

She shoved past me and into my apartment. I closed the door, running my hand through my disheveled hair, not at all wanting to deal with this right now.

“What can I help you with?” I asked her, moving to my kitchen. My fridge was filled with drinks, and the occasional takeout container. For the most part, this kitchen was used for drinking.

“I know you’ve introduced yourself to Jolie.”

“And?”

“You can’t have her, Roman, she’s off limits.”

I loved that I was making her so madly jealous. It was doing things for me. At first, it may have been about that but it had grown into much more. There was just something about Jolie Caldwell I couldn’t get past.

She was the finest conquest I had ever beheld and there was little anyone was going to do or say to stop me from taking what I wanted.

“Nothing is off limits to me, Rose, haven’t you figured that out yet?”

“She is,” she said. “Look, I get it. What we had was fun and all but I’m not a challenge anymore. I tried to be, but that only seemed to make you go elsewhere but you can’t do this with Jolie. She’s meant for more.”

I didn’t like how that sounded but I wasn’t going to pry. I didn’t want Rose to know that Jolie had me wound up tighter than a bolt on a bridge. In fact, I didn’t want anyone to know that little tidbit. I prided myself on being a heartless beast and I intended it to stay that way.

“Well, Rose, I don’t tend to let people tell me what to do, as you well know.”

She moved closer to me, the red rings around her eyes more prominent now. She’d been crying. It wasn’t over me, that much was for sure. I wondered if Jolie had made her cry and that was why she was here.

If that were the case, I desperately needed Jolie here. It meant Jolie wanted me as much as I wanted her.

And all from that goddamn kiss in the deli shop.

“This is going to cause a war between the families,” she said. “You can have anyone you want. Please leave her be. There’s a reason the city was divided in the first place.”

“Did she ask you to come here?” I asked her.

“No.”

“Does she know you’re here?”

“No.”

“Then why should I leave her be? She’s a fun little game.”

“She’s no game,” Rose said. “They’re wanting her to marry that Lord Francois guy.”

Instantly, I felt a cold sense of dread fill me. It wasn’t something I was used to feeling. Jolie was mine.

“Who wants her to marry at such a young age?”

“Her mother, of course. And it’s not so young. Diane was just sixteen when she met Edward and seventeen when she married and had Jolie.”
