Chapter Eight

The sound of Amir shouting out to my father had my fears begin to ease. I could hear him screaming that he couldn’t escape from this, he’d never be able to escape judgment if he was witness to my father killing his daughter.
It had stopped the banging on the door.
I felt the boat shift, as if someone got off it, or someone else had gotten on. I didn’t know what to do.
Did I risk coming out and maybe being killed or taken back to Verona or did I stay in here until Roman came back?
I made the quick decision to open the door. My father was on his own boat, heading back to Verona. Amir was still in his own boat, at least five yards from me.
“It would be best if you came back,” he called out to me. “Come and face judgment for what happened.”
“I think I’ll pass.”
He sighed. I didn’t hear it, but I could see it. He was about to leave when we both heard the motor of another boat heading our way. I looked over at it.
The familiar green nose of the boat told me it was Bennett and Roman. Amir was getting his gun ready.
I didn’t know what to do. I ran for the lock box, the one I couldn’t seem to get open before, and keyed in the code with confidence this time. The door shot open and I grabbed the loaded gun. I aimed it at Amir.
He noticed what I had done and he aimed his gun at me. “Don’t be stupid, Jolie.”
“You can go now,” I yelled at him. “I’m in no need of your aid.”
Bennett stopped the boat just short of ours. Roman looked from me to Amir. I didn’t know how he was going to get away from this.
No…I didn’t have enough time with him. This couldn’t be how it ended. There was no way he would be found innocent if he was taken by Amir.
Amir moved back to Roman, training the gun on him, and steering his boat to Bennett’s. He was about to jump onto the boat with Bennett. That’s when I realized they were still in Verona limits. Amir had every opportunity to take Roman back.
The second Amir jumped on board, Roman jumped off and dove under the water. Amir, angry that he’d been outsmarted, shot into the water. I raised my gun again and shot at Amir, actually, at his hand. Luckily, the bullet took his gun from his hand. It flew into the water and he looked over at me in shock and what I could only imagine was an impressed look. Roman broke the surface right near the boat and pulled himself up on it.
He was safe.
“That’ll be all, sheriff.”
Amir jumped back on his own boat. “This isn’t over. Eventually, you’ll need to come back.”
He took off, back to Verona, and Bennett took off after him. Roman took the gun from my hand and pulled me into a very wet hug.
“Are you okay?” he asked. “What happened?”
“I don’t want to think about it,” I told him. I hugged him tightly and he held me for as long as I needed.
He put the gun down, his hand going to the side of my face, forcing me to look up into his eyes. He’d been scared, I could see it in his eyes.
Our lips met in a heated kiss, a kiss that told us exactly what we both needed. I needed his body on mine just as much as he needed to be inside of me right now.
He walked me back, toward the steps that led down to the bed. He pulled me up, my legs wrapped around his waist as he walked me backward. Once we got down to the lower deck, he dropped me on the bed, yanking my shorts off me. His eyes glazing when he noticed I was naked under the shorts. My bikini top was next. One yank and it broke into pieces in his hands. He removed his wet clothes, the way his jet black hair clung to the sides of his face, and the way his cheeks were flushed from diving into the ice cold water had me feeling hot and bothered, my pussy throbbing for him already.
