“We need to do this. We need to take it from them and save the city.”

Gunnar nodded. “I know. Convincing my dad may be another thing entirely.”

That was true. Amir was loyal, but he was also fair. He wouldn’t care for what my father had planned and knowing my father he wouldn’t care about killing for what he wanted.

That included the goddamn sheriff.

“Well do what you can,” I told him. “I gotta get back to Jolie.”

“Before you go,” Vince said. “You may want to check out your apartment. Amir is in the process of getting a warrant. If he sees what you have planned, he can fuck things up fro you.”

“Good point.”

“It’ll be staked out already,” Gunnar said. “I’ll go. You head back to the boat before my dad finds out you’re here.”

I nodded and got out of the booth, heading toward the car.

“Shit,” I heard Gunnar say out loud. I turned around to see he was looking down at his phone. “My dad just told me Edward Caldwell is on his way out to your boat to confront his daughter. You bet your ass he doesn’t give a shit that she’s in international waters.”

I ran for the car and headed to the marina without a backward glance. Edward had no hesitation in taking his daughter back, I knew that, but if he killed her. I would wage a war on this city that no one would be safe from.

Jolie

I finally got myself out of bed as I heard the motor of a boat nearby. Perhaps Roman had conducted his business quickly and was already on his way back. I grabbed a bikini top and tied it around me as I headed upstairs to the deck.

The boat was coming in quickly, but it was a little bigger than the boat I knew Bennett used. The color on the front of the boat was not the usual green I knew Bennett used either. Confused, I came right out to the back of the boat to look just as the boat sped up. I saw my father’s angry face come into view. Everything inside of me froze.

Roman was god knew where and I had no idea where he’d hidden the guns. I did, however, know where he hid one of them so I ran for the lock box and entered in the passcode.

It buzzed at me and shone a bright red light. My hands were shaking as the boat docked beside this one. I felt the boat shift as my father climbed on board, my fingers shaking as I keyed in the code again. Again, it buzzed.

“Jolie,” I heard his booming voice behind me. Turning, I looked over at him. The man who beat me just days ago for defying him. My hands shook as he moved closer to me. The man who would willingly marry me off to someone for money. The man who called himself my father.

I shook with fear because I knew no one would save me out here.

So save yourself, my inner voice shouted at me.

“Father.”

“Come with me now.”

“No, I’ve chosen Roman, you can’t tell me what to do anymore.”

“Like hell I can’t,” he said, menacingly. “You’re my property until I give you to someone else and like hell I will give you to that piece of shit boy. Now, get your ass on the boat.”

I shook my head, my words failing me all of a sudden, but there was no way in hell I would get on that boat with him.

“Do you not remember what I said to you if you refused to marry Paul?” he asked me, his voice calm. The memory served me well, and I shook, my body knowing what he would try to do if I refused to obey him. “I said I would drown you out here and believe me, if I did it, no one could prosecute me. I’d be free to return to Verona and live the life I earned. You wouldn’t even be remembered.”

My body shook, my bottom lip quivering as he came closer to me. I didn’t know how I was going to get away from him. I was close to the stairs to the bottom level. I could lock him out.

Within a moment, I had darted behind me and locked the little wooden door. He ran for it, but when I felt him pounding behind it, I knew it would hold him out but for how long?

Tears ran down my face as I heard him screaming obscenities behind the door.

Was this it?

Was this how I died?
