No one saw me, so I hid. I needed to know why they were there.

Savvie had just arrived carrying a basket of fruit, and I gestured for her to come with me into a private space.

“You’re on a fruit diet?”

“No. I bought some organic stuff for the kitchen. I’ve decided to eat nothing but organic.” She frowned. “What’s up?”

“A couple of detectives have just arrived. You heard about our ordeal?”

“Not much. I know that Drake’s left for a break.”

My heart sank. “Where?”

“I think he’s gone back to London. Do you know what those detectives wanted?” she asked.

I had almost forgotten about the detectives. “No. But after everything that’s happened, I’d love to know.”

She curled her finger. “Come with me.”

We stood close by the door of the office. I’d since learned that the door had needed repairing for a while, which worked well for eavesdroppers like us.

“Alice Ponting,” we heard as we snuck to the side.

Just our luck, Ethan came bouncing in, and Savvie placed her finger on her mouth.

He got it. That family and their secrets.

“There’s a DNA match to Alice Ponting’s recently excavated place of burial.”

Ethan frowned deeply as he turned to Savvie.

“I believe you were visited a month ago about the bones found at a building site owned by Reynard Crisp—bones belonging to Alice Ponting, who was not only affiliated with you through university, but was also your late husband’s fiancée.”

Suddenly, I understood why both Savvie’s and Ethan’s jaws had dropped.

“DNA from a recent crash victim is linked to the remains found at said building site. The DNA belongs to Detective Chief Inspector Jim Reilly, who we’ve been watching for a while because of his connection to Reynard Crisp, a business partner of yours we believe.”

Still no response. I would have donated a kidney to see my grandmother’s expression at that moment.

“And you’re telling me this because?” Her voice remained steady.

“We need to know exactly what happened the night of Alice’s disappearance.”

“But I have already given you a statement.”

“We’d like to hear about it again. Sometimes, vital details are left out due to heightened emotions and what not. And your husband, her fiancé, is no longer alive. Perhaps he said something.”

“I refuse to comment without my lawyer present.”

We heard chairs shifting, and all three of us escaped quickly, ending up outside. I followed both brother and sister, who looked like they’d seen a ghost.

“What the fuck?” Ethan said at last.

We made it to the labyrinth, which I’d discovered was where they had gone as kids to get up to no good—like kiss, smoke, or later, as adults, take drugs.

I would have loved to have been in that family growing up because, from where I stood, that family’s story was more exciting than some bingey Netflix series.

“We need to speak to Dec,” Savvie said. “Maybe he knows more about Alice Ponting. Remember how Dad said it had broken his heart when she disappeared?”
