He nodded, looking pensive before turning to me. “And your interest?”

I told them all about being chased and how the detective that their mother had sent Drake to spy on had crashed while pursuing us.

They both shook their heads in disbelief.

“Poor Drake will be gutted to hear that the detective died. We left the scene,” I said.

“That’s major. I wouldn’t go around telling anyone that,” Ethan said.

“I was terrified that if we approached the car, he’d shoot us.”

Savvie nodded. “It’s not a normal situation. Don’t worry. It’s safe with us.”

Ethan nodded in agreement, and the tension in my shoulders loosened. In many ways, it was therapeutic sharing the drama of those past few days with someone.

But with Drake not taking my calls and now a murder investigation implicating my grandmother, could things get any crazier?

Chapter 28

Drake

“Areyousureyou’reokay?” I’d lost count of how many times my mother had asked that.

“I’m fine, really.”

She popped down her crossword, which had become a daily habit since she’d been couch ridden. “Have you heard what happened to that detective?”

I shook my head.

“From what you told me, sweetheart, it was probably wise not to stop. He might have killed you.”

Having forgotten my recent buzz cut, I went to sweep my hair from my face—an action that had obviously become a nervous tic.

“And you cut your beautiful hair, which looked just like that handsome Harry Styles’s.” She turned down her mouth.

I had to smile at my mother and her fixation on pop stars and their lives. Too many hours spent reading magazines.

“I look tougher this way, and I’ve got a gig this weekend at some political event. A bunch of world leaders getting together.”

“That sounds so exciting. Maybe you can get a photo of someone famous.” Her eyes shone with sincerity.

“I’m afraid that’s not the done thing in this game.”

“I hope they’re paying you well, at least.” She balanced her cup and saucer in her palm.

“More than generous. Carson’s agency runs on fair terms.”

“And you’re staying here in London for a while?” Her face brightened.

“I’m not sure how long, Mum.” I played with my fingers.

That question came as a reminder of how confused I was about my future. I missed Bridesmere already. The relaxed lifestyle suited me better than the frantic city, but for the time being, distance from all the crazy shit going on around Manon more than suited me, if only to regain some sanity.

Declan had understood when I’d asked for time out. No doubt he’d heard about our adventure. He’d reassured me that there would always be a job for me at the farm, which was thriving since the market had opened.

Carson had more than enough work to keep me in London permanently, and that beat moping around, which wasn’t me. I liked to stay busy. I also needed to keep saving to get my mother into a place that was wheelchair friendly, should she ever need one.

At least with me there, I could get her moving and doing rehab stretches.
