I waved them off and turned to Kylie. “I’ve got to go.”

“What about your run? I can think of something nicer to get your heart pumping.”

“No.” My voice had that edge.

My head filled with thoughts of the party, wondering if I would have received an invitation. I would have preferred to be a guest rather than work, but Caroline had asked, and the money would come in handy. I planned to pay off my apartment as soon as possible.

Kylie followed me back to Reboot, and I stopped walking. “Look, it was just once. Okay? Now, I’ve got to work.”

Her mouth turned down. “But you were so into me the other night.”

I took a deep breath. “I’m not looking for anything right now.”

She inclined her head. “We can just do casuals.”

“No.” My shoulders tensed. It was getting ridiculous. “Now, please go.”

“Oh… it’s like that, is it? Then I’ll make a complaint about how you touched me during my press-ups.”

“That’s bullshit, and you know it.” I turned away.

“Oh, you’re so hot when you’re angry.” She smiled.

I puffed. “I’m sorry if I gave you the wrong idea the other night. As I said, I’m not looking for anything. Okay?”

She seemed on the verge of tears, which made me regret my harsh tone.

“We’ll catch up soon, okay?” I gave her a small smile. “For a training session, I mean.”

“Mm… maybe. You took advantage of me, though.” She turned away abruptly and walked off.

I stood there shaking my head, hoping it wouldn’t come back to haunt me.

I needed to tell Carson about what had just happened with Kylie, if only to get some advice, should her threats become a reality. As I entered the gym, I found Carson and Savvie cuddling and kissing.

They saw me and pulled apart.

“Sorry.” I lifted my palms.

Savvie looked like she’d been crying, despite her bright smile. That confused me. Carson also had tears in his eyes. I felt like a first-class prat for arriving at some kind of special moment.

“I should leave you to it.”

“No. It’s okay, really. My beautiful wife was about to go.”

She slanted her face and smiled sweetly.

They made the perfect poster couple for a happy marriage, and I thought that if ever I married, I hoped that would be me.

Savvie turned to Carson. “You can tell him.”

“We just found out that Savvie’s pregnant.”

I hugged Savvie, then Carson. “That’s great news. I’m so happy for you both.”

Carson kept shaking his head and staring at his wife like a miracle had happened.

Despite needing Carson’s advice about Kylie, I didn’t want to crash their moment of bliss and pretended I’d left something behind instead.
