I exited Reboot, weighed down with anxiety.

Was Kylie about to stir trouble?

Chapter 5

Manon

Therewerenervousgiggleseverywhere and girls talking over each other. I’d turned into everyone’s big sister by helping with makeup.

Summer looked all doe-eyed at me as I added a little more lipstick to her plump lips. She would do well. Four men had already made a bid on her.

Watching me in the mirror, she wore a grateful smile. “You’re great at this.”

“Thanks.” I tousled her blonde hair a little more.

She went to smooth it down. “I like it straight.”

“Trust me, you’ll get more if you look like you’ve just gotten out of bed.”

Her strained giggle revealed her anxiety. Something I’d become alarmingly accustomed to while working at Cherry, which affected me too. My mother’s tough outlook had not quite set in, despite my best efforts because becoming detached from situations or people would have helped.

Putting aside the participants’ nervous anticipation, which was present pretty much every night at My Cherry, it had been an easy night so far. No drama. No pep talks. And after making sure the girls looked the part in their sexy lingerie, we were ready to start.

Darkly lit with lamps at each table, the purple room had an arty touch with tasteful black-and-white images of nudes on the walls.

Rey sat at the bar, chatting with one of the clients, who I hadn’t seen before. The waiting list was long. They came from everywhere.

Apart from filling Rey’s already-overflowing pockets, My Cherry also fulfilled his own appetite for the young and untouched. He always bought a girl. One a week. The man was insatiable.

I’d asked him why he didn’t just get a girlfriend. He pulled a face like I’d suggested he get a mohawk or something just as ridiculous.

“I don’t do attachment. It’s all about sexual pleasure. Speaking of which…”

I rolled my eyes. “Photos are the best you’ll get from me, Rey. And I’m not ready yet.”

That was me bullshitting again. I just needed those five million pounds in my bank account, then I could walk away from all the sleaze. My birthday couldn’t come quickly enough because, at last, I could be independent and make choices unrelated to capitalising on my so-called physical assets.

Rey knew so little about me. He still thought I was pure. What a laugh. My mother kept telling me to keep him close so that he’d marry me, but Rey wouldn’t marry.

If I gave myself to him, I would be a million pounds richer, but I would face being booted out of Merivale. My grandmother had made it clear that if I went with Rey, she would turn her back on me.

Even without the money, I still would have chosen my grandmother over Rey. I enjoyed being there, and as a bonus, I could now have the best of both worlds: an apartment in London and a room at Merivale.

“Is she here?” Rey asked after the girl I’d lined up for him.

“Natalia’s keen on being auctioned. She’s got her eye on the big prize. And something tells me that ten thousand won’t cut it.”

“If she’s worth it, I’ll bid. Can you arrange a private meeting?” His eyebrow flew up.

We knew what that meant. I’d watched. Couldn’t help myself. I was too curious for my own good. The girl would be taken to a private room where she would strip naked and open her legs wide. I swore I could hear the men grunt, and the room had this thick, musky stench, which I suppose was the smell of lust.

“I’ll have a word with her now if you like.”

He nodded. “Before the doors open. I don’t want anyone else having her.”

“She thinks she’s here for an auction. As I said, she wants the lot. A holiday. A big deposit. A credit card.”

“Is that an assumption?”
