“Hey, I’ve been there. It’s just that certain women are the ones. You know? You dream about them. They follow your thoughts. And I’m happier than ever. Savvie still has her moments, but then, so do I.” He laughed.

“Are you trying to encourage me to make it work with Manon? You didn’t seem too keen on her once. Remember you told me to stay away?”

“That was before I got with Savvie, and people change. I’ve noticed Manon has matured somewhat. She’s more respectful of others. Not as pissed off with the world. She’s not the same girl I met when she worked for Crisp.”

At the mention of that devil, I had to ask. “Any news on him?”

“I know the cops are sniffing around over bones exhumed at a building site he owns.”

“Are they going to lock him up?”

“He’s still at the casino last time I looked. We were there the other night with a bunch of friends for a poker game. Doing a little spying for Caroline.” He chuckled.

“There are drugs there, man, for fucking sure.”

“We all know that. But they can’t pin anything on him.”

“At least he’s not here tonight.” I wondered about that video. “You know he tried to kill us?”

He nodded. “Don’t worry. The cops know everything. He’d be crazy to try anything.”

“I guess so.” I sighed.

He tapped my shoulder. “Hey. I think you should muscle in on that dance. That good-looking guy’s getting frisky with Manon.”

I’d been watching and had even noticed my veins tightening.

I stepped onto the dance floor just as the music changed and a slow number came on for a waltz. The guy in the designer suit went to hold her when I cut in.

“She promised me this dance, mate.” I flicked my head and gave him one of my fuck-off glares, and off he went.

“Hey.” She pouted. “I never promised you anything.”

I took her by the waist and drew her in very close, so close my dick sprang to life for the first time in weeks. “I think you did promise me.”

“Are we talking about dancing?” Her chin tipped towards me, and her eyes shone with a suggestive smile, and I knew deep inside that I could no more deny myself that sexy, albeit troubled girl than I could air.

Breathing her in as I would a perfumed flower, I allowed all the angst to melt away.

It was that moment and nothing else.

The past could just stay there.

And the future? Well… no one could tell what that might bring.

But one thing was for sure. I was going to be the one unzipping that pretty dress tonight.

“Does this mean you’ve forgiven me?” Her eyes were wide and searching.

“I forgave you ages ago, Manon. It’s me I’ve needed to forgive.”

Her brow creased. “What have you got to be angry with yourself about?”

“Lots of shit. Let’s not think about it. Just let me enjoy this moment.”

She clutched me tighter and buried her head in my shoulder, and suddenly, all I could see were possibilities.
