Declan chuckled at her dry comment. “I’ve just upgraded my plane.”

He said it like he’d just traded in a car. I’d never met anyone who owned his own plane before—a reminder of my boss’s considerable wealth and how he used it to give people like me a chance.

“Wow. That’s cool,” I said.

“We’re off for a quick trip to Spain.” He smiled at Theadora, but she didn’t look that excited.

“You’re not a happy flyer?” I asked her.

“I am slowly getting used to it. I just fear for Declan’s safety when he goes off on his rescue missions.”

Ethan jumped in. “That’s Dec. The do-gooder of the family.”

“I’d prefer if he’d volunteer at a dog rescue shelter or something,” Theadora muttered.

Declan placed his arm around her and drew her in tight. Her face softened. If ever I needed a picture of love, I had it there with Declan and Theadora.

Just like Ethan, who also had his arm around Mirabel.

“I didn’t know that about you,” I said. “Have you rescued anyone lately?”

“Last week, we had to winch up a man who went off course in his boat in rough waters.”

Both surprised and impressed, I nodded. “That must have been on the television.”

He shrugged. “I prefer to fly under the radar.” He smiled.

I was about to respond when Manon entered.

As she swanned in, Manon made heads turn, especially the male patrons. She smiled over at us, then her eyes landed on mine and held me captive. I’d never met a woman who could do that, but then, Manon was a unique experience.

“Someone invited Manon?” Ethan frowned.

I knew they hadn’t exactly warmed to her. Manon had admitted that she wanted to be accepted and regretted rubbing her new family the wrong way.

She leaned in and kissed Declan and handed him a gift, then Savvie stepped in and hugged Manon, which drew a sunny response from Manon.

After all the greetings had happened, Manon turned to me. “Back in a minute.”

Off she went, swaying those hips and looking even more beautiful than the last time I’d seen her.

“So, who invited her?” Theadora asked.

“I did,” Savanah said. “We’ve gotten close.”

“Even after she stole your clothes and made all those bitchy comments?” Mirabel asked.

“Let’s just say we’ve bonded, and she’s not that stirrer anymore.”

“Working at that fucking Cherry bar isn’t exactly helping her cause,” Ethan responded.

“I hear she plans to leave, and anyhow, she was there for me at the hospital.” Savanah pulled a sad smile, and Carson put his arm around her. “She’s young and had a tough upbringing. We all fuck up. Don’t we?”

“I guess you’re right. And imagine having Bethany as a fucking mother. Beelzebub in Prada.” Ethan grimaced.

Mirabel left to perform just as we all got our drinks.

The pub filled steadily as more people arrived to join our group. The Lovechildes knew everyone in that village it seemed, and Declan, I soon discovered, had placed his card down at the bar to shout the whole pub and had catered with finger food.
